I understand this may be parochial but the fee increases are impressive if not "ludicrous State Department fees for US Citizen services"

From the U.S. Embassy website in Beijing:
"IMPORTANT NOTICE
All consular operations in China, including visa and American Citizen services, will continue normal operations during the U.S. Government shutdown."
nnoble,
By your logic, the topic of US passport renewal, which is directly related to the US government shutdown, is also "not what GK is intended (sic)." I'd say your perspective is a bit parochial in its self. :-)
tallamerican, sorry my bad.
It has been law in the US for many years that hospitals cannot refused care to anyone. There have been many scandals when private hospitals have provided minimal care then had indigent patients transported to public hospitals.
I had a major heart attack, called 911, was transported to the closest hospital, was jump started, and had an angioplasty procedure, all before I gave them little more than my name and address.
ObamaCare is about insurance not about getting care. The issue is who will pay for the care given. Ultimately the government pays when the patient can't. Obamacare mandates every American must buy insurance or be fined/taxed. After you pay, you are subject to rules and dictates which, depending on age, lifestyle and cost of procedures, limit the care you can be given.
However, 80% of all US medical costs are incurred in the last 6 months of the patients' life. By deciding to limit end stage care, denying life extending procedures, substantial cost saving can be made. By establishing review and standards setting panels the bureaucracy can control costs. Some say these "death panels" sole reason for existence is to limit the care given and "save" money.
The progressive Obama administration and Obamacare supporters inject equality by making it illegal for rich persons to obtain healthcare outside of the "death panel" guidelines. Also prohibited is travel outside the US for treatment. As it is a cold hearted government that mandates death by bureaucracy, the wealthy are merely taxed if they violate the law. Additionally, the review panels dictate how much doctors and hospitals are to be compensated.
Given the Obama administration's dislike of old persons, and expats, I see little benefit in Obamacare for me personally.
In summary: 1) The government forces us to buy insurance, 2) The government protects the insurance companies by restricting the care given, 3) The government controls what care givers can charge for providing services, 4) The government imposes fines/taxes on those who obtain treatment, or remain, outside the ObamaCare structure.

Good for quality, but pricey, hand tools.
Be aware they will push whatever they are selling. Some of the staff have no idea about the technical side of appliances.
I went there to buy a stove. I repeatedly told them I would be using bottled gas. They sold me a stove. When I went to my local gas guy, I learned there are at least three kinds of gas sold. Luckily, B&Q did not deliver as promised. I went back to the store and discovered they had sold me a stove they needed to be hooked up to the gas main. I got my money back.
The sales lady was almost in tears, 没有问题!I don't know if it a safety or design issue, but I would think B&Q would know and care.
Last week had an 8:45am flight.
Subway starts at 9am. I have no idea where to catch an airport express bus. Eight taxis refused to go to the airport. After almost an hour standing on Beijing Lu took a black taxi, this dude drives slower than my mother, 120 yuan.
Flight back was delayed so I learned the subway stops running at 6:10pm.
Getting a taxi back was easy, more taxis than customers. Taxi was 87 yuan including 1o yuan toll, airport to Beichen area. Yes, he took a longer route than necessary.
Kunming imagines being a gateway for international travelers. New airport but hard to get to and from it.
World Class Airport, NOT!
Tonight "Peacock", a performance by Yang Liping (杨丽萍), to begin her world tour, 8pm, 100-1680 yuan at Yunna Haigeng Auditorium.
Saw this lady perform at the Pasadena Civic Auditorium, in California, in 1995. Quite a good and interesting show.
I'm going to try to make it.
Not so good. Kimchi had a very sour taste. Other food was nothing to brag about. I don't think I would go back.
This bus station is not located as indicated. It is further North!
Welcome to the new GoKunming!

It is a bit better, thanks.
Kunming: A New Perspective
发布者Great to know you guys are going to be Kunming boosters. In spite of many problems, like never ending construction, worsening air quality and the forever metro project it is a good place to live.
I just hope you guys have the balls to point out when the emperor isn't fully clothed.
Welcome to the new GoKunming!
发布者First reaction: Damn it looks good!
Then after a few minutes of clicking this and that the second reaction: It works!
I only have one complaint. I know it is the latest style but the grey font text is a pain to read. Maybe, because of my old and failing eyes, I find reading websites employing the subdued fonts a bit difficult to read.
Good job!
Official proposes reopening Wujiaba Airport
发布者AlPage, you have hit on a way to increase GDP and provide more jobs! Not exactly a twofer, more likely three or four times the cost of one workable airport, it will make Kunming a unique Twin Airport Spring City! The cost can be laid off on travelers with enhanced fees for tourists. Airlines can charge extra fees as well.
Yunnan GDP third fastest-growing in China
发布者Beijing regularly discounts provincial GDP growth. That is, the sum of the 33 provinces is less than the national totals.
Given the current MBO goals that drive GDP growth at any cost, impressive growth statistics are to be expected. With changes in MBO goals, more emphasis on environment, more concern with income inequality, less investment and debt driven growth, we can expect a decline in rate of growth.
Beijing has touted 'go West' and develop for about a decade. That plus money flowing into Yunnan has led to massive infrastructure development, short term employment and impressive GDP numbers. Can it last?
Remember, what is torn down adds to GDP, what is built adds to GDP, what is repaired adds to GDP, what is removed to urban areas adds to GDP. Increased activity financed by debt, especially economically unfeasible infrastructure projects, just add to the piper's bill.
Clearly, wholesale building of apartments, tall buildings, roads and bridges, provide an economic bonanza for a small portion of the population and contribute to income inequality as the workers get a pretty small piece of the pie.
Some that follow statistics and macro economic flows in China foretell difficulties ahead.
As one experienced in the collection of economic data and understanding how it is converted into the grand GDP guess, I am amazed at the technical dexterity developed by China in that forecasts of GDP, made before, six to eight weeks, the end of a 13 week quarter, are so accurate. Somehow prophecies are consistently fulfilled.
