Sorry, my last post got posted before I finished it.

...at 1980 prices a 4TB drive would cost $4.3 Billion dollars. We also paid $35 for 8K memory chips.

I do not and would not trust the cloud. I consulted at a company that provided MS office via the internet. It was very slow and often just not there. The employees had diskless workstations and had 1-2 hurs a day downtime.. I was king as I could produce stuff, spread sheet analysis and my invoices, on my notebook and my printer much faster.

Today, my solution is a desktop hooked to a 10 port USB 3.0 hub with 6 external HDs totaling 17TB and 2.5TB internal storage.

Clouds are just vapor.

Another consideration is file compression. I have been taking digital images for nearly 20 years. When hard drives cost a lot more than they do today, I did two things: 1) I backed up my photos to CDs, 2) I uploaded photos to three or four different services.

The life of good quality CD discs, reliably, is about five years. About half were useless after five years.

Images uploaded were compressed and quality suffered. So the money I spent for more megapixels and better camera was wasted.

Now I can buy a 4TB external hard disk for about $200. I have about 120,000 images.

In 1980 I was the controller of the first desktop computer manufacturer to ship models with 'Winchester' hard drives. We paid $5,400 for each 5MB drive. At 1980 prices a 4TB drive would cost

Forums > Living in Kunming > Magic Market Mushrooms

I have a friend who worked on mushroom taxonomy at the Kunming Botanic Garden. As I do like mushrooms, I asked her about buying and cooking the mushrooms I saw in the market. She was not forthcoming at all. Finally, this expert at identifying and classifying mushrooms, said there are two rules to LIVE by:

!. Don't eat wild mushrooms unless you know them well,

2. If you make a mistake, you are dead.

Good for quality, but pricey, hand tools.

Be aware they will push whatever they are selling. Some of the staff have no idea about the technical side of appliances.

I went there to buy a stove. I repeatedly told them I would be using bottled gas. They sold me a stove. When I went to my local gas guy, I learned there are at least three kinds of gas sold. Luckily, B&Q did not deliver as promised. I went back to the store and discovered they had sold me a stove they needed to be hooked up to the gas main. I got my money back.

The sales lady was almost in tears, 没有问题!I don't know if it a safety or design issue, but I would think B&Q would know and care.

Last week had an 8:45am flight.

Subway starts at 9am. I have no idea where to catch an airport express bus. Eight taxis refused to go to the airport. After almost an hour standing on Beijing Lu took a black taxi, this dude drives slower than my mother, 120 yuan.

Flight back was delayed so I learned the subway stops running at 6:10pm.

Getting a taxi back was easy, more taxis than customers. Taxi was 87 yuan including 1o yuan toll, airport to Beichen area. Yes, he took a longer route than necessary.

Kunming imagines being a gateway for international travelers. New airport but hard to get to and from it.

World Class Airport, NOT!

Tonight "Peacock", a performance by Yang Liping (杨丽萍), to begin her world tour, 8pm, 100-1680 yuan at Yunna Haigeng Auditorium.

Saw this lady perform at the Pasadena Civic Auditorium, in California, in 1995. Quite a good and interesting show.

I'm going to try to make it.

Not so good. Kimchi had a very sour taste. Other food was nothing to brag about. I don't think I would go back.
