@Alien: Why a "plea for a consensus that allows everyone to have the kind of discussion he/she wants to have."
Isn't a consensus inconsistent with what "he/she wants?"

Harmony and consensus are reasonable goals if one has an agenda but individual wants tend not promote either consensus or harmony of ideas.

I am confused.

An interesting book "The Big Lie: Exposing the Nazi Roots of the American Left," by Dinesh D'Souza,

$9.20, Kindle, is an attempt cast a light on what is going on in America's political discussion today.

He gets into the weeds of labels and terms like; Left, Right, Liberal, Conservative, Nazi, Anti Nazi and how the labels are shifting and gaining new meanings.

Decidedly biased, D'Souza managed to lay out a lot of history while developing a cogent argument for his position. Agree with his thesis or not, most commentator agree his information is accurate.

Selecting or limiting contributors by either baring or choosing who can participate is effectively censoring discussion.

Lacking overt censorship, the less obvious step is to attempt to guide or control the direction of the discussion. Often attempts at

restricting discussion to a narrow range of permitted ideas defeats the purpose of discussion.

Frankly, calling out those that stray is, at its core, an attempt at control. Some folks have, as a personality trait, a need to control. When the person attempting to control the discussion has an ideological bent, it is cause to wonder if the control is concerned with the purity of the discussion, or, the purity of ideas.

A somewhat philosophical view.

Paroles de Stances Au Un Cambrioleur

- Georges Brassens

Quel bon critique d'art mon salaud tu ferais!

Autre signe indiquant toute absence de tare,

Respectueux du brave travailleur tu n'as

Ge who is without sin.....

@Alien: You sure do like correcting others and controlling the discussion. When it suits you, straying off topic is okay. When the direction of the discussion is not to your liking you try to manage it. Finally, you call for the moderator to end the thread when you are frustrated.

Sorry Boobie, you are not the forum topic manager.

Great to know you guys are going to be Kunming boosters. In spite of many problems, like never ending construction, worsening air quality and the forever metro project it is a good place to live.

I just hope you guys have the balls to point out when the emperor isn't fully clothed.

First reaction: Damn it looks good!

Then after a few minutes of clicking this and that the second reaction: It works!

I only have one complaint. I know it is the latest style but the grey font text is a pain to read. Maybe, because of my old and failing eyes, I find reading websites employing the subdued fonts a bit difficult to read.

Good job!

AlPage, you have hit on a way to increase GDP and provide more jobs! Not exactly a twofer, more likely three or four times the cost of one workable airport, it will make Kunming a unique Twin Airport Spring City! The cost can be laid off on travelers with enhanced fees for tourists. Airlines can charge extra fees as well.

Beijing regularly discounts provincial GDP growth. That is, the sum of the 33 provinces is less than the national totals.

Given the current MBO goals that drive GDP growth at any cost, impressive growth statistics are to be expected. With changes in MBO goals, more emphasis on environment, more concern with income inequality, less investment and debt driven growth, we can expect a decline in rate of growth.

Beijing has touted 'go West' and develop for about a decade. That plus money flowing into Yunnan has led to massive infrastructure development, short term employment and impressive GDP numbers. Can it last?

Remember, what is torn down adds to GDP, what is built adds to GDP, what is repaired adds to GDP, what is removed to urban areas adds to GDP. Increased activity financed by debt, especially economically unfeasible infrastructure projects, just add to the piper's bill.

Clearly, wholesale building of apartments, tall buildings, roads and bridges, provide an economic bonanza for a small portion of the population and contribute to income inequality as the workers get a pretty small piece of the pie.

Some that follow statistics and macro economic flows in China foretell difficulties ahead.

As one experienced in the collection of economic data and understanding how it is converted into the grand GDP guess, I am amazed at the technical dexterity developed by China in that forecasts of GDP, made before, six to eight weeks, the end of a 13 week quarter, are so accurate. Somehow prophecies are consistently fulfilled.

Good for quality, but pricey, hand tools.

Be aware they will push whatever they are selling. Some of the staff have no idea about the technical side of appliances.

I went there to buy a stove. I repeatedly told them I would be using bottled gas. They sold me a stove. When I went to my local gas guy, I learned there are at least three kinds of gas sold. Luckily, B&Q did not deliver as promised. I went back to the store and discovered they had sold me a stove they needed to be hooked up to the gas main. I got my money back.

The sales lady was almost in tears, 没有问题!I don't know if it a safety or design issue, but I would think B&Q would know and care.

Last week had an 8:45am flight.

Subway starts at 9am. I have no idea where to catch an airport express bus. Eight taxis refused to go to the airport. After almost an hour standing on Beijing Lu took a black taxi, this dude drives slower than my mother, 120 yuan.

Flight back was delayed so I learned the subway stops running at 6:10pm.

Getting a taxi back was easy, more taxis than customers. Taxi was 87 yuan including 1o yuan toll, airport to Beichen area. Yes, he took a longer route than necessary.

Kunming imagines being a gateway for international travelers. New airport but hard to get to and from it.

World Class Airport, NOT!

Tonight "Peacock", a performance by Yang Liping (杨丽萍), to begin her world tour, 8pm, 100-1680 yuan at Yunna Haigeng Auditorium.

Saw this lady perform at the Pasadena Civic Auditorium, in California, in 1995. Quite a good and interesting show.

I'm going to try to make it.

Not so good. Kimchi had a very sour taste. Other food was nothing to brag about. I don't think I would go back.
