@rejected_goods: Thanks for the link, interesting.
Noticed Air Vietnam was 60th. During the war, Air Vietnam had an impressive safety record as it had operated for many years without a fatal accident even in monsoon weather and low level contour flying. Impressive as the DC-3 type aircraft swooped out of the clouds and plunked down. More impressive was riding on the plane never seeing the ground from Saigon to Plieku.
The record lasted until this capitalist run polluting airline had a plane shot down by communist environmentalists.
When I converted from a Z to an X visa, I had to 1) exit China and 2) return on a L visa. The school then got me the X visa, That was a few years ago so rules might have changed.
A new, delightful travel cookbook from Zhang Mei, the Harvard MBA from Dali and founder of WildChina.
In 2014 I was to spend several weeks in the Dali area but illness ended my plan. Happily Zhang Mei takes you on a tour through the country side in much the way I like see China. She provides enough clues so the DIY traveler can explore and find the rare sights off the, so far, beaten path.
You learn how salt is mined and how Yunnan ham is cured. You get recipes on how to cook it and where to find a nong jia le (农家乐), literally ‘Farm House Happiness’, a type of traveler’s experience – usually in the form of a simple restaurant and sometimes with an attached guesthouse.
Well written, I highly recommend this book for a taste of Yunnan travel and food.

Full disclosure: The author, who I have not met, and I have mutual friends so I have known of her for years. I met her husband once and know one of her employees.
Be aware they will push whatever they are selling. Some of the staff have no idea about the technical side of appliances.
I went there to buy a stove. I repeatedly told them I would be using bottled gas. They sold me a stove. When I went to my local gas guy, I learned there are at least three kinds of gas sold. Luckily, B&Q did not deliver as promised. I went back to the store and discovered they had sold me a stove they needed to be hooked up to the gas main. I got my money back.
The sales lady was almost in tears, 没有问题!I don't know if it a safety or design issue, but I would think B&Q would know and care.
Subway starts at 9am. I have no idea where to catch an airport express bus. Eight taxis refused to go to the airport. After almost an hour standing on Beijing Lu took a black taxi, this dude drives slower than my mother, 120 yuan.
Flight back was delayed so I learned the subway stops running at 6:10pm.
Getting a taxi back was easy, more taxis than customers. Taxi was 87 yuan including 1o yuan toll, airport to Beichen area. Yes, he took a longer route than necessary.
Kunming imagines being a gateway for international travelers. New airport but hard to get to and from it.

Last time I was in Banna I asked about waste water treatment. No one knew anything about that. Guess the Mighty Mekong will handle it.
