Forums > Living in Kunming > Why do Foreign Companies come and go in Yunnan?

With respect to gunpowder, actually what we call 'black powder' in the US, the ancient Chinese invention was a different formula, mixture ratios I think, than the European version.

Basically, the difference, as I recall, was the Chinese version of black powder had a slower burn rate. expressed in feet per second, than the European black powder.

The Chinese version produces wonderful pyrotechnics while the European version, when used in guns, was great for war and killing.

I have more comments: Check the thread on copying IP.

Inventions are patented. Patents originated in common law countries. In the US, Patents used to be for 17 years while in most other countries it was 20 years. Now in the US, patents have a life of 20 years.

Copyright laws depend on what is being copyrighted. Life in the US is 70 years up from 28 years not too long ago. Exact life for books, music, written stuff is too complicated for me to keep up with. I copyrighted a paper on short term forecasting in high growth industries and allowed a couple of college text book writers to teach my method if I was given credit and a copy of the book.

Trademarks and trade dress are other IP subject to IPR laws as well.

China, interestingly, copyrights all it laws and regulations thus controlling use of and written discussion of, and hence teaching, of her laws and regulations.

China and...

Zeng Jinrun, a columnist published by the hawkish Global Times website, said "If an Australian military aircraft arrives as planned, China should use Russia as an example and take bold action and send our military aircraft to drive it away," Mr Zeng wrote in the editorial. "If this does not work we should just shoot it down."

Mei Mei Cafe is great!

Orchid, and her sister, run a great place. Good food, lots of free advice on where to go and how to get there. Want a tour, need a car, a ticket? See Orchid, she's the tall beautiful lady.

Every winter since 2004 I've headed south to Banna. First stop is Mei Mei's. Just tell the taxi driver "Mei Mei Cafe" and in about 10 minutes you are there.

Now, if they just had T-Shirts

Good for quality, but pricey, hand tools.

Be aware they will push whatever they are selling. Some of the staff have no idea about the technical side of appliances.

I went there to buy a stove. I repeatedly told them I would be using bottled gas. They sold me a stove. When I went to my local gas guy, I learned there are at least three kinds of gas sold. Luckily, B&Q did not deliver as promised. I went back to the store and discovered they had sold me a stove they needed to be hooked up to the gas main. I got my money back.

The sales lady was almost in tears, 没有问题!I don't know if it a safety or design issue, but I would think B&Q would know and care.

Last week had an 8:45am flight.

Subway starts at 9am. I have no idea where to catch an airport express bus. Eight taxis refused to go to the airport. After almost an hour standing on Beijing Lu took a black taxi, this dude drives slower than my mother, 120 yuan.

Flight back was delayed so I learned the subway stops running at 6:10pm.

Getting a taxi back was easy, more taxis than customers. Taxi was 87 yuan including 1o yuan toll, airport to Beichen area. Yes, he took a longer route than necessary.

Kunming imagines being a gateway for international travelers. New airport but hard to get to and from it.

World Class Airport, NOT!

Tonight "Peacock", a performance by Yang Liping (杨丽萍), to begin her world tour, 8pm, 100-1680 yuan at Yunna Haigeng Auditorium.

Saw this lady perform at the Pasadena Civic Auditorium, in California, in 1995. Quite a good and interesting show.

I'm going to try to make it.

Not so good. Kimchi had a very sour taste. Other food was nothing to brag about. I don't think I would go back.
