If you are an American, no visa is required to enter Hong Kong. You will need a new China visa to come back to China.
Make sure you have the required paperwork as it has been changed recently. You can use visa agents (some info on agents here in the forums, somewhere). The visa office is near Central, there are no cheap digs in Central or the Wanchai area.
Voltaire seems to have it figured out. Just don't ask a lot of dumb questions, Honk Kong people will pickup on your ignorance and it will cost you. Know what you are going to do and about how much it will cost. Then do it. You start to ask and whine, you pay more.
Best is to pay for 24 hour service. You get it the next day and costs less than a night in a hotel. When they had same day service, I would come from Zhuhai by early morning ferry, be in line before 8am and back to Zhuhai that evening. Today, different rules and you can't do it.
Danmairen is pretty close to the cost. If you are quoted 300 to 500 move on. Also, lock the image file so they can't play with it in PS. Remember, they always know what is better and what you really want even if it ruins what you think was a good photo. I had 1 meter wide prints come out with the contrast and colors changed. Good luck.
Not sure what the rules are today, but in 2008, it was necessary to return to your home country to get the Z visa.
I would walk away from this employer. You are going to have a lot of problems. Without a residence permit and permission to work, you cannot have an employment contract. You have no legal protection and your employer can do as he pleases. You are a criminal subject to fines, imprisonment, and, deportation.
On one fine payday, you're gonna hear, "Sorry, we are so busy we don't have time for your salary again this month."
The new guidelines announced in early March have already begun to payoff. Yunnan Tourism Co Ltd announced on April 3rd that it willn be profitable in Q1 2017.

Prince says that Blackwater involved 40,000 missions and only 200 involved his employees firing guns. From what I have heard it was a highly effective and capable company. A large part of the services provided was training. Prince is very wealthy guy who solves unusual problems.
Seems China has often accepted religions from abroad: Buddhism, Islam, Christianity, Communism, Climate Change. The last three are the same: Get converted, unquestioned belief, must have faith as nothing is provable, and pain with suffering for the apostate and unbeliever.
The deposits should be invested but that much cash is tempting. Chinese companies tend to grow debt so holding cash deposits is mot in the plan. Deposits are a liability, if refundable, in this case aka debt.
Be aware they will push whatever they are selling. Some of the staff have no idea about the technical side of appliances.
I went there to buy a stove. I repeatedly told them I would be using bottled gas. They sold me a stove. When I went to my local gas guy, I learned there are at least three kinds of gas sold. Luckily, B&Q did not deliver as promised. I went back to the store and discovered they had sold me a stove they needed to be hooked up to the gas main. I got my money back.
The sales lady was almost in tears, 没有问题!I don't know if it a safety or design issue, but I would think B&Q would know and care.
Subway starts at 9am. I have no idea where to catch an airport express bus. Eight taxis refused to go to the airport. After almost an hour standing on Beijing Lu took a black taxi, this dude drives slower than my mother, 120 yuan.
Flight back was delayed so I learned the subway stops running at 6:10pm.
Getting a taxi back was easy, more taxis than customers. Taxi was 87 yuan including 1o yuan toll, airport to Beichen area. Yes, he took a longer route than necessary.
Kunming imagines being a gateway for international travelers. New airport but hard to get to and from it.
