Forums > Living in Kunming > exchange large amount of money

Big news if it is true. Last month it was possible to buy dollars at the airports. Selling USD seems to be a very good and profitable business. Stopping it makes no sense as China is trying to improve currency transactions.

Is someone phishing for illegal, and unnecessary, black market info? Beware!

Forums > Living in Kunming > Shipping TO China

I buy from Amazon.com and have it all sent to my son. Most of it is Kirkland brand from Costco at a slightly lower price than in the store. He remails it to me. A few years ago Amazon would send it direct but no longer does so.

We keep the value of each box about $50-$75. Last year I bought an ASUS Transformer tablet and keyboard, Value was $750 and the tax was 200 RMB. Less than 5% tax which makes think laotou is right about the tax being "nomial." China's import duties are on CIF which means the declared value plus insurance plus shipping cost.

Also, I had to go to the IPO to collect the box shipped "Priority" but the box mailed "First Class" was delivered to my home and left with the guards at the gate.

Don't know about 10lb bags but the cost of mailing would be maybe $100 or more. Hope it doesn't get punctured.

Forums > Living in Kunming > Opening a Chinese bank account

In addition, BOC and ICBC seem to always have one ATM that will take foreign bank cards. I use BOC because they are everywhere and China Merchant Bank, CMB, because the service is faster and better.

Oddly, if you open a BOC account in Kunming there is a fee to deposit and withdraw in cities outside Yunnan, maybe other Yunnan cities as well. The fee is small and I ignore it. I have never gotten a statement from a Chinese bank.

Banking is China is usually face to face at the branch with your account.

You don't need a Chinese to go with you to open an account but I would bring a friend. When I lost an ATM card they asked me to ID the lady that helped me.

Online banking is problematic. I don't know about today, but I used online banking and it was in Chinese. It was fine for a year or so but they changed the input forms and I gave up. How good is your Chinese reading?

The new guidelines announced in early March have already begun to payoff. Yunnan Tourism Co Ltd announced on April 3rd that it willn be profitable in Q1 2017.

Now that is effective management and speedy accounting!

Defeat Corruption!

Frontier Services Group is backed by China's state-owned CITIC Group and Hong Kong-based investor Chun Shun Ko. FGS advises and supports Chinese investment in oil and gas in Africa.

Prince says that Blackwater involved 40,000 missions and only 200 involved his employees firing guns. From what I have heard it was a highly effective and capable company. A large part of the services provided was training. Prince is very wealthy guy who solves unusual problems.

Seems China has often accepted religions from abroad: Buddhism, Islam, Christianity, Communism, Climate Change. The last three are the same: Get converted, unquestioned belief, must have faith as nothing is provable, and pain with suffering for the apostate and unbeliever.

The deposits should be invested but that much cash is tempting. Chinese companies tend to grow debt so holding cash deposits is mot in the plan. Deposits are a liability, if refundable, in this case aka debt.

Cash will be gone when the bikes are gone.

Good for quality, but pricey, hand tools.

Be aware they will push whatever they are selling. Some of the staff have no idea about the technical side of appliances.

I went there to buy a stove. I repeatedly told them I would be using bottled gas. They sold me a stove. When I went to my local gas guy, I learned there are at least three kinds of gas sold. Luckily, B&Q did not deliver as promised. I went back to the store and discovered they had sold me a stove they needed to be hooked up to the gas main. I got my money back.

The sales lady was almost in tears, 没有问题!I don't know if it a safety or design issue, but I would think B&Q would know and care.

Last week had an 8:45am flight.

Subway starts at 9am. I have no idea where to catch an airport express bus. Eight taxis refused to go to the airport. After almost an hour standing on Beijing Lu took a black taxi, this dude drives slower than my mother, 120 yuan.

Flight back was delayed so I learned the subway stops running at 6:10pm.

Getting a taxi back was easy, more taxis than customers. Taxi was 87 yuan including 1o yuan toll, airport to Beichen area. Yes, he took a longer route than necessary.

Kunming imagines being a gateway for international travelers. New airport but hard to get to and from it.

World Class Airport, NOT!

Tonight "Peacock", a performance by Yang Liping (杨丽萍), to begin her world tour, 8pm, 100-1680 yuan at Yunna Haigeng Auditorium.

Saw this lady perform at the Pasadena Civic Auditorium, in California, in 1995. Quite a good and interesting show.

I'm going to try to make it.

Not so good. Kimchi had a very sour taste. Other food was nothing to brag about. I don't think I would go back.
