Lots of us probably live with sub-standard products like that drywall material here as well. Good luck suing the Chinese companies. The boss will turn the key and run off with as much as he can carry before anyone will ever get a dime in compensation.
It's not that interesting tbh unless you're really into goldfish. The tower on top of the hill was closed so the nice panorama eluded us, it looked permanently closed as well. We managed to save the trip by walking up and behind the tower where we found a path going East and down from the hill. After a 30 min trek we came out into a large empty drainage canal near the police dog training facility of Yunnan. After heading South we came to the Agricultural University's campus and from there we could walk back to 北市区. From the top we spent maybe 2-3 hours walking back to Kunming. Although that was interesting the hei long tan itself wasn't.
I think the whole affair has lost it's meaning since everybody is putting up the ugly bars instead. Not exactly making the city prettier.

I guess when you confess to having fired hundreds of rockets away over a period of several months you are bound to get coincidental rain at some point. Personally I am amazed they managed to produce a thunderstorm as well. That's obviously some brand new secret Chinese technology at work.

Went there yesterday and it totally made my week. Nice decor and friendly staff and a real salad bar. Sadly we both wanted mexican food so I can't really say much about their other courses. The food was great but just a tad spicier would have improved the dish. The best thing was that we almost had the place to ourselves and we could have a quiet conversation without shouting, spitting Chinese people in the background. I realised how much I had missed that since coming here.
We went to Chicago Coffee a couple of days ago and it was a nice experience. The place is cozy with soft comfy chairs (I realized how much I have missed one since coming here) and they have a nice little collection of English language books in the corner consisting mainly of classics and travel litterature. I was looking forward to trying their advertized tortilla bar but it wasn't up and running that evening.
Instead we went for 2 12 inch pizzas -roast chicken and pepperoni- but we quickly realized that 1 would have been enough. Those things are heavy. I am mainly into Italian style pizza but Chicago's double layered pizzas are well worth a try. Their coffee seems to be a bit on the expensive side but people say good things about it and they have got a nice selection. I wouldn't mind dropping by again some day,, hopefully when they've got the tortilla thing going. English speaking staff btw.

I think most people get their PhDs in their thirties,, not much time left to build up field experience. It reminds me of how the Chinese employers on job application forms want to know skin colour and demands a picture. At my workplace a woman recently didn't get hired "because she was too tall". Priceless.
