I'm slightly surprised by the language used by the Americans here. I am aware that the US can be a bit more brutal than Europe when it comes to crime, but is it really like this? Do the other Americans feel it's a "kill-or-be-killed" world as well? I know we are kinda sheltered in northern Europe, but really?

Laotou,, I'm slightly worried on your behalf :) I would do everything to walk away if something happened on the street but I'm thinking more like encountering robbers or burglars at home, where you might not really have any options. It's not that I generally don't feel safe around here -apart from in traffic- but if someone would abduct a migrant worker for her 500 kuai, stab her eyes and hold her for ransom for 1 wan, I can't help wondering if it isn't a real posibility that these kinds of people would follow a foreigner home to see where he lives or try to get their hands on his loved ones. Yes, I am being slightly paranoid about this I know, but I have a wife now, and a baby on the way so I just can't help wondering what I'd do in that situation.
Now I can't imagine having a bat at home is against the law, but I am still not sure about carrying a small canister of mace around, which I feel would be ideal for fending off an attacker in a non-lethal way. Anyone?
I feel like chipping in with something that MIGHT make all of this disappear, since you said she has been told she can't have another baby after getting an abortion. This might be some superstitious and/or uninformed information she's been fed by nongmin relatives, stupid friends or she's misunderstood the doctor. I'm guessing unless you guys are going to shack up and live happily ever after, the best thing for everyone in this mess is for her to get the abortion, and if she's been misinformed or is acting on it, it definitely might be worth looking into this option. As far as I know -especially in China with the largest number of abortions a year by FAR- if you go to the right place, the risk of ending up infertile is miniscule.
Yuan. I think I'd prefer a baseball bat to a cleaver as in incapacitate insted of murdering someone.
I know some foreigners who carry mace around. Legal? A small canister would probably be preferable to more lethal weapons.

Went there yesterday and it totally made my week. Nice decor and friendly staff and a real salad bar. Sadly we both wanted mexican food so I can't really say much about their other courses. The food was great but just a tad spicier would have improved the dish. The best thing was that we almost had the place to ourselves and we could have a quiet conversation without shouting, spitting Chinese people in the background. I realised how much I had missed that since coming here.
We went to Chicago Coffee a couple of days ago and it was a nice experience. The place is cozy with soft comfy chairs (I realized how much I have missed one since coming here) and they have a nice little collection of English language books in the corner consisting mainly of classics and travel litterature. I was looking forward to trying their advertized tortilla bar but it wasn't up and running that evening.
Instead we went for 2 12 inch pizzas -roast chicken and pepperoni- but we quickly realized that 1 would have been enough. Those things are heavy. I am mainly into Italian style pizza but Chicago's double layered pizzas are well worth a try. Their coffee seems to be a bit on the expensive side but people say good things about it and they have got a nice selection. I wouldn't mind dropping by again some day,, hopefully when they've got the tortilla thing going. English speaking staff btw.

发布者One of the reasons I like China is the food and especially how they manage to make vegetables both tasty and interesting to eat. Yu sang quizi, Gong bao quezi, Hongshao quezi and all the variants,, great taste (although a bit on the oily side),, back home I would never eat eggplant. Here I don't mind ordering nothing but vegetable dishes and cut out the meat. Unthinkable in my native country's bland cuisine.

发布者According to China Daily 18.000 homes/buildings collapsed and one person was killed. Sounds odd that only 1 person has died so I expect the death toll will rise quite a lot over the next couple of days.

Typical. Blame the foreigners for not bending over backwards for their employers. 19 of 20 on the top scorers list were foreigners you say? How does that fit with them being "overpaid"?
