Can I add a query of where to get Malaria meds (Larium, ideally) as I head to Bangladesh. I tried chemists but no luck. Would hospitals stock it? Or Centre for Disease Control?

If I saw a penguin walking down the street, I'd stare. Foreigners in some parts of China are almost as as rare! A quick smile usually transforms the stare into a more pleasant non-verbal interaction. Not always...
There are plenty of language schools in Kunming (of varying quality). The Chinese spoken in Kunming is not as standard as in Beijing, but the language classes are cheaper and the Chinese Mandarin teachers usually have good pronunciation. If you are teaching at a language school, you'll meet English-speaking Chinese through your colleagues and get them to help you with everyday problems, although if you are studying Mandarin, you may wish to hang out more with non-English speakers to practice your speaking and listening. Kunming has a different vibe to Beijing or Shnghai - more relaxed and "small town". The weather is generally great too. I think you'll like it here.
@ HFCAMPO That's the one. Thank you. I'm travelling to Bangladesh (hopefully), so need the works!!
Yes, LP seemed very up-to-date. And the official position "we like people to get the visa in advance" is probably not tha practical position "if someone turns up at the airport without a visa....". Fingers crossed!

This place is now closed.
Price is now 100RMB for adults, 70RMB for children.
Some of the animal areas are as far as 10+km from the entrance - you can buy a hop on/off bus ticket for 60RMB per person, but there are also clearly marked walkways for those who are full of energy.
Everything inside is pretty expensive - consider bringing a picnic.
Many of the animals are in large outdoor enclosures. Some are caged. The park calls itself a safari, but this is not a "drive your car amongst the animals" thing. It's more like a decent western zoo.
There are places to handle/be photographed with animals, for a fee. Also, some kids amusements.
The animal show is free, but a waste of time (unless you love watching goats, sheep, pigs, horses etc!!).
Good labelling i English thorughout.
Still worth a visit, especially for the arhat statues. The 11am vegetarian lunch is basic, but still only 10RMB. Free entry.
Prague cafe used to be my favourite cafe in Wenlin area but I went for lunch there today after a few months away and it's really gone downhill (new owners?). The menu was a photocopy, the food was lacklustre and much more expensive than before, the decor was dull and the service so-so. I won't be back there anytime soon.
It's open! And it's free. And its terrific for kids.
The museum is surprisingly interactive (although only 2/3 of the attractions are working) and modern (VR, simulators, touchscreens, etc). Sadly, no English on any of the displays but the fun is in trying to work out how the exhibits work and what they are supposed to be showing. Well worth a visit.

发布者Eh? London hasn't played an important role in the music scene? Have you not heard of The Who, Sex Pistols, The Clash, Pet Shop Boys, The Rolling Stones, The Police, Madness, Coldplay, Fleetwood Mac, Iron Maiden, Peter Gabriel, David Bowie, etc. A few influential acts there, I think.
Kunming natural history museum opens
发布者Despite the tumbleweed response to my last comment, I decided to visit the museum today. It's really quite good fun and was a welcome hour-long respite from a rainy day. The admission fee is actually 20RMB for adults now. I was met at the entrance by Qian Yamin who speaks great English. She kindly let me wander around, even though the museum was technically shut (the day after the New Year weekend holiday is considered a "Monday"). The displays are well-presented, with some English. My favourite display was the taxidermy dogs, surrounding an alligator!? Worth a visit, anyhow.
