I just read about this on BBC website. Many world leaders will apparently be coming to Kunming in October for this. Anybody know more about it? Will GoK do an article previewing it soon? Any implications for those of us who live here?

Basically because he can't use his British passport to exit China. As he was born here, he is considered a Chinese citizen and they can only have one recognised passport - a Chinese one. So he would need a visa in his (new) Chinese passport to leave China. Up until now, the Entry/Exit visa provided a way to leave and return to China without using any passport.

PSB procedure update for anyone is a similar situation:

My son (6) was born in China, has a hukou and a British passport (I'm his British Dad, Chinese Mum). Up until today, when taking him abroad, we've got him an Entry/Exit visa from the PSB to allow him to leave/return China and then used his British passport for travelling.

The PSB now say that whilst this is still OK for trips to the UK, he will need to get and use a Chinese passport (with relevant visas from the country to be visited) for all other countries. They will only provide the Entry/Exit visa for UK (as UK passport holders can't get a UK visa on foreign passports).

Hopefully this info can help any other parents who have used a similar method to take their child on holiday.

My neighbourhood (at the top of hill off XueFuLu) has been on 1-2 hours of running water for many months already, caused by the lowering of water pressure which means it can't reach our level. My (Chinese) wife spoke to the guy who drives the daily water truck up to us and he said the problem was less the drought and more the quadrupling of Kunming's population with no consequent investment in new reservoirs. I'm sure there is some truth in that.

Price is now 100RMB for adults, 70RMB for children.
Some of the animal areas are as far as 10+km from the entrance - you can buy a hop on/off bus ticket for 60RMB per person, but there are also clearly marked walkways for those who are full of energy.

Everything inside is pretty expensive - consider bringing a picnic.

Many of the animals are in large outdoor enclosures. Some are caged. The park calls itself a safari, but this is not a "drive your car amongst the animals" thing. It's more like a decent western zoo.
There are places to handle/be photographed with animals, for a fee. Also, some kids amusements.
The animal show is free, but a waste of time (unless you love watching goats, sheep, pigs, horses etc!!).
Good labelling i English thorughout.



Still worth a visit, especially for the arhat statues. The 11am vegetarian lunch is basic, but still only 10RMB. Free entry.



Prague cafe used to be my favourite cafe in Wenlin area but I went for lunch there today after a few months away and it's really gone downhill (new owners?). The menu was a photocopy, the food was lacklustre and much more expensive than before, the decor was dull and the service so-so. I won't be back there anytime soon.



It's open! And it's free. And its terrific for kids.

The museum is surprisingly interactive (although only 2/3 of the attractions are working) and modern (VR, simulators, touchscreens, etc). Sadly, no English on any of the displays but the fun is in trying to work out how the exhibits work and what they are supposed to be showing. Well worth a visit.
