Forums > Living in Kunming > Trying to buy a dog

I haven't seen any boerboels around. I have seen some pits, though they are apparently not allowed. It's not just about what breeds are banned in China, but what breeds are not allowed in the city.

Unfortunately, the pet markets here are mostly horrible puppy mills. They sometimes even drug and dye the dogs to make them look better/healthier before the sale.

You'll basically have to do what responsible owners do back home, and put in the effort to get to know a reputable breeder.

@hehehe: I think you're confusing the story of Google Pinyin IME stealing code from Sougou. I couldn't find anything about them stealing from youdao.

Google translate is currently updating its algorithms with a new kind of AI, which is supposed to improve things quite a bit. Might be worth a try.

If you can get the app up and running and access the servers, you can download the Chinese translation files for offline use.

I personally use the Pleco Dictionary, but my needs are different.

Forums > Food & Drink > Western-run places in KM too expensive?

A lot of people are throwing estimates around and completely ignoring the actual costs of running such a business, of which ingredients are often a small part. These places have to pay rent, which can be really expensive for a good location. They also have a lot of employees to pay. And let's not forget all the taxes and fees involved in running a public-facing business...

When you take the actual cost of doing business into account, these places aren't making nearly the margins you think they are.

Forums > Food & Drink > World's most expensive tea

The original trees belong to the national government. They are not allowed to be harvested. Even when they were, the tea was reserved for top national officials and for special diplomatic gifts (I believe Queen Elizabeth was given a small tin of it to mark the HK handover).

Even the "aged" or "authentic" stuff mentioned in the link are almost certainly not from those original trees. The prices are far too low.

Right next to my office, so I eat here pretty often. The place has a nice garden design with lots of outdoor seating for nice days.

A nice menu of Western food with solid brunch choices, fresh fruit juice mixes, and good salads. The burger is also very good.

Excellent Thai food served in a beautiful art deco setting. The bar is also top notch, with great cocktails, whiskys and cigars.

When the weather is good, try to get a table on the rooftop garden, which offers views of the Bird and Flower market.

May be a little pricier than some of the other Thai restaurants in town.

An exciting new gallery space built from an old factory warehouse in the Paoluda Creative Industry Park. Looking forward to seeing what they'll do with it.

A great little place in the middle of a beautiful valley chock full of great climbing spots.

The beds and rooms are very comfortable, though the bathrooms are shared, and of the "eco" variety (a plus as far as I'm concerned).

The owners are very helpful about everything from info on climbing spots to trip planning and getting around the area.

Also, the place is dirt cheap. I wholeheartedly recommend it.
