To answer my original question, for those who may be interested.
FEES
For British passport holders.
Z visa was HK$ 360
+ 300 for 1 day service.
I think the American passport holder next to me was paying 1100.
I have just come back with my Visa. Here is some additional info that may be useful for all applicants, not just Brits.
The website is still woefully out of date. It is still providing the downloadable forms that have not been used for several year, even though the website shows more recent updates, the visa pages have not been updated.
When you enter HK you will be given a small slip of paper, your arrivals card. It is carbonized and you will be given back the back copy which is your departure card. This is easy to lose.
On arrival your passport will not be stamped. You are given and even smaller piece of paper called an entry slip. You will need the original, and a photocopy of this, for your visa application. This is not mentioned on the Website.
AT THE VISA OFFICE
Currently there is a lot of construction and walled off areas next to the building. There are signs stuck on the hoardings that direct you to the visa office.
On arrival, you will have your bags X-rayed. No water, no food, and you cannot take suitcases or large packs upstairs. Better to leave them in the hotel. But I think there is a luggage storage service on the other side of the building, on the ground floor.
The Visa Office is now on the 3rd floor, not the 7th as still listed on the website.
On arrival at the 3rd floor, you join a queue and someone will check that you have your passport, passport photo, and the correct paperwork that you need. The new visa form is one part only, even if you apply for work visas. The forms on the Website are the old two part forms. They will not be accepted.
The staff will give you the correct forms and direct you to the photocopier if you need it. They are unable to answer any higher level questions.
Photocopies of your passport main page, and your entry slip should be provided.
There is an on sight photocopier. It is HK$ 2 per copy. The machine will only accept 1 dollar coins. Make sure you have some. There is a reception desk and the receptionist should be able to give you change, BUT it was not staffed the day I went.
There is also a photo booth that is staffed, if you need photos.
Once you have shown you have all the correct forms/photocopies the staff will give you a ticket with your automated queuing number. The electronic boards will show you which desk to go to in your turn.
There were no pens to fill in the forms, make sure you take one.
The visa form will ask you to fill in information about your last visa you used to enter China. I have been in China on an RP for several years. The last time I entered China was also on an RP. I told them this and they looked at me blank. I asked, "Do I put my last visa details or my last RP details in here?" Answer was, "Yes". Follow up question was, "Yes visa, or yes RP". Answer, "Yes". So I put in the last RP date and place of issue. I got my visa application processed so I assume that was correct.
If there are boxes you cannot fill in, the desk staff will tell you what information to put in to compete the form. You will get there eventually.
When your application is accepted they will give a blue slip with your fee written on it. You present this slip and pay the fee on collection.
ON COLLECTION
On arrival at the 3rd floor, go straight to the bank counter, counters one and two. Present your blue slip and pay your fee. Then go to counter three, with your blue slip and fapio, and collect your passport with the new visa inserted.
