At the end of the day, people (the world over) have preconceived notions. People tend to look for information to back up their beliefs. Firmly held beliefs, especially if based on ignorance, can be unshakable.

I someone does not like the idea of a daughter dating outside of the recognised social group (race, colour, creed, social class, economic group) they will look for reasons to oppose. They will not see or want to hear other views.

I do not condone the actions of the idiot in Beijing. But things are getting blown out of proportion. There is no RAPE. As far as I am aware there is no attempted rape. There is only the arrest for sexual assault. The netizens baying for blood are demanding a charge of attempted rape. Do we give in to the mob?

This incident is feeding a nationalist fervour. This is about the only thing that scares me in China right now. But that is a different topic.

Basically, to use an old phrase.

You don't sh1t where you eat.

We don't have all the facts. But I have one key question for you.

Do you think that feeding this image of the 'foreign devil' is likely to do any good, or does it have the potential to do only harm?

I think the latter.
