Forums > Living in Kunming > Residence Permit for Foreigners

From my limited understanding of the regs. The residence permits are for 12 months only. After you have been both married to a Chinese citizen, and been residing in China for a cumulative 5 years you can apply for a permanent residence permit. However, the permanent residence permits are only issued for 5 or 10 year periods, they are not truly permanent.

From my experience of dealing with Chinese bureaucrats, you should get your paperwork renewed before it expires. If you don't you risk at least a fine. Be aware that there has been a recent high profile clampdown of 'illegal foreigners' driven by central government in China.

It may be helpful if the software has a facility to split and merge threads.

Threads do go off topic, but often the new discussion is also worthwhile. Just deleting off topic posts will deny the community the benefit of this discussion, and people will often not want to start a new topic after input has been deleted.

Spliting the topics is often the best, and easiest way to tidy up a topic. If a moderator then posts a message ***topic split*** then everyone knows what has happened.

Forums > Travel Yunnan > In Kunming 4 days, best places to visit?

Tell him not to get his hopes up. Kunming is not so much a destination city, as a gateway to Yunnan. There are some really nice restaurants, if you know where to go. I think that all your dad can really do in the evenings is soak up some of the ambience.

Off topic, but related to theme songs. When we watched terrestrial TV we listened to the whole theme, even if only in the background while we quickly made a cup of tea or finished off some other chore. With streaming, or watching box sets, we quickly FF over the theme song and titles. We are missing a lot of great music.
Everything else said by the last two posters can be captured within the idea that we no longer live in a society, we live in a market.

A reasonable choice of lumber that has improved over time. Fancy hardwoods like walnut, and mahogany are in abundance. There are some plywood and rubber-wood boards available. There are also some kiln dried imported softwoods and merbao available. Some of the lumber is very green, so look for the kiln dried if you need stable timbers.

Echo everything said by others.
Breakfast great and the serve from 8am. Most other places say 9am and they still are not ready.
Sandwiches are cheap 22-32, and really packed full of filling. We got some sandwiches for a day out, the only mistake I made was ordering two, as this was too much. These are seriously good sangars, and they are wrapped in alu foil.

In fairness to Metro, they are a wholesalers, and not really a supermarket. Hence the need for a card, which can be got around.

They have improved in the year I have been away. They now carry a more consistent range of imported foodstuffs and they also seem to have sorted out the mported milk supply.

They have a wider range of electrical appliances now, there is a coice of more than one toast. There is also a better range of seasonal non foods, like clothes, shoes, garden furniture and camping gear.
