One of the current advantages of Chinese local fresh produce is that the farmers are small and are not using the high yield, perfect shape and color, but no taste cultivars. These cultivars require irrigation and more chemicals.
There are still ugly but sweet things to eat here. I think the environmental stresses (drought, irregular water supply, etc.) actually add to the flavour.
@Sen
Have you checked that it is actually only 1.5 hrs per day, or are you judging this by previous posts?
Judging by most other univerisity Chinese courses (Shanghai, Hangzhou, Zhengzhou) 6000-7300 rmb is about right for one semester of teaching, without accommodation. But that would normally be 4 hours teaching per day.
I am from UK and I put a coat on in the evening here.
If you are going to rent, it is important to get a south facing room/aspect. For the winter. In summer the sun is often quiet high and so less direct radiation on windows. But still some.
Don't worry Yankee, it will warm up again. Despite the name, Spring City, it does have seasons. We might be south but we are also at altitude.
Although it doesn't get much colder here, and to be realistic it is much better than Beijing winter.
Off topic, but related to theme songs. When we watched terrestrial TV we listened to the whole theme, even if only in the background while we quickly made a cup of tea or finished off some other chore. With streaming, or watching box sets, we quickly FF over the theme song and titles. We are missing a lot of great music.
Everything else said by the last two posters can be captured within the idea that we no longer live in a society, we live in a market.
A reasonable choice of lumber that has improved over time. Fancy hardwoods like walnut, and mahogany are in abundance. There are some plywood and rubber-wood boards available. There are also some kiln dried imported softwoods and merbao available. Some of the lumber is very green, so look for the kiln dried if you need stable timbers.
Echo everything said by others.
Breakfast great and the serve from 8am. Most other places say 9am and they still are not ready.
Sandwiches are cheap 22-32, and really packed full of filling. We got some sandwiches for a day out, the only mistake I made was ordering two, as this was too much. These are seriously good sangars, and they are wrapped in alu foil.
In fairness to Metro, they are a wholesalers, and not really a supermarket. Hence the need for a card, which can be got around.
They have improved in the year I have been away. They now carry a more consistent range of imported foodstuffs and they also seem to have sorted out the mported milk supply.
They have a wider range of electrical appliances now, there is a coice of more than one toast. There is also a better range of seasonal non foods, like clothes, shoes, garden furniture and camping gear.
