You will find a distinct lack of all of the above. Get a really big refrigerator as restaurants aren't plenty either.

There is a spa next to the Howard Johnson. That was the only thing I thought useful out there.

If you teach at the uni, maybe you can use the student's gym facilities.

Dry Ice - never seen it used or for sale in Kunming. Even regular ice is pretty hard to come by.

I have seen plastic coolers for sale in the camping or auto sections of Carrefour or Walmart. The coolers were a bit pricey. Regular plastic food containers of all shapes and sizes sold there too.

@HFCAMPO

Sorry to say, but you are the person who began and falls into the "confuse you even more regarding your question"

I posted two links that addressed Natsymir's question directly and didn't rail against or evangelize vaccines. Your reply decidedly turned this into a pro/anti vaccine thread. I'd prefer not to have this spiral into a bloated thread similar to the Laowai thing, so I think comments from now on should address the OP's question.

HFCAMPO, appreciate your other insightful posts related to travel. We disagree on vaccines, but adults can agree to disagree.

@ludwig

"Beware of the kidnappers, though" !?!? That got my attention!

Please elaborate as I plan on biking down to the lake sometime during the summer.

This is becoming a major draw for locals, nearing the crowds of the auto fair. Traffic around the area was a nightmare though. Also, this fair was open to public (ticket 30rmb).

@bluppfisk

That is if you are lucky and the guard station is off eating lunch or break. Or you can show up at night. Last time I went through on the east entrance, the guards chased me down in a minivan and demanded I pay the 50rmb (now 65) entrance ticket, even though I was just planning on passing through.

No guards care if you are leaving TGL at either entrance, but if you weren't checked entering, then that's good luck.

Yet another 15rmb increase. Though Tiger Leaping is one of the fees I think is well worth it.

The scenery on the East Ring that Geogramatt mentioned is wonderful. You'll need raingear cause your riding with the clouds at one point. Bit spartan on services, so bring some energy bars and extra bottle of water. If your in good shape, you can make the halfway point of 白水台 in a day by bike.

Most airports in China have the last shuttle bus depart when the last flight arrives. Whether they do this as a courtesy or it's a rule of law, I don't know. But it's very comforting.

The 28rmb salad bar buffet is the best meal to be had in Kunming for that price. Killer onion rings as part of that salad bar! Starts at 5pm Mon-Sat. They don't restock a dish if it runs out, but it's rarely an issue because there are so many others and no dish runs out unless you show up past 7'ish on a fri or sat.

Their steaks are Chinese steaks, and not a Western level of cut of meat, but the Korean dishes are excellent.

The only reason it's 4 and not 5 stars, is I live far away, and maybe the quality of the steak. Of course it was only 50rmb for a steak, potatoes, and a salad bar buffet included.

Oh yes, the staff are really nice, but it's not fine dining, so they don't rush to take your order or bring out water. The place is more relaxed, so give'em a hollar or just grab a menu and some silverware yourself.
