Anybody who wants to get beyond the Big Mac might search the keyword 'Mcdonaldization' on the internet. The description of the process isn't hard to follow, doesn't require academic specialization, and it runs way beyond the portals of the Golden Arches. Some of this might back up mmkunming's ideas of cultural colonization - but note that it is not simply 'America' or 'the West' that is involved here, but the influence of large corporate entities, mostly centered in the US, it is true, for historical reasons that have made the US the center of a lot of corporate 'development' and activity. Anyway, it's no longer simply 'American', and looking at it only from the perspective of American culture is to miss much of its significance and to become distracted in the direction of nationalism, which is really a secondary factor, although an extremely important one.

@Haali: Another solution, if you're worried about it, might be to choose more carefully the dishes you order at restaurants - you might try this at McDonalds, but I'm not sure that would be your best bet.

@blue: mmkunming seems to be caving in to dealing with the interests of many foreigners here, not by accepting them but by bothering to deal with them at all. Perhaps I am too - what am I doin here?

@mPrin: lifestyle dissimilar from the one you'd have back home is not necessarily 'lower' or 'higher' - obviously it's going to be different, no matter what you do. I would think that might be at least one reason to be here.

The metro will be a great thing but it's certainly going to cost - even better than the bus system, which was an excellent supplement to the bicycles before everybody started buying cars. The point is less that the metro will be good than that the automobile population is bad.

Much of modernity is seriously warped, and everybody wants to get in it and proudly make the same mistakes previously made by others. It's profitable too - for some.

Not quite what you'd call a jumping place, but not bad at all for rather standard US-type meals, not overly expensive, and with a really good salad bar that's cheap, or free with most dinner dishes after 5:30PM. You can get a bottle of beer or even wine if you really want to, but I've never seen anybody do it - maybe that's just to take out. Chinese Christian run, and they hire people with physical disadvantages, who are pleasant and helpful. Frequented by foreign (mostly North American) Christians and Chinese Christians - was started by a Canadian couple associated with Bless China (previously, Project Grace), who are no longer here, but no religious pressure or any of that. Steaks are nothing special, and I avoid the Korean dishes, which I've had a few times but which did not impress me.

As a shop and bakery, it's very good bread at reasonable prices, of various kinds (Y18 for a good multigrain loaf that certainly weighs well over a pound. Other stuff too, like granola and oatmeal that is local, as well as imported things, including American cornflakes and so forth, which some people seem to require.

Large portions, seriously so with the pizza, which is Brooklyn/American style, I guess. Convivial, conversational, good place to drink with good folks on both sides of the bar, especially after about 9PM.

Really good pizza and steaks. The wine machine fuddles me when I'm a bit fuddled, & seems unnecessary. Good folks on both sides of the bar.
