Skip the car - one thing we don't need more of here - and think twice about Metro & Carrefour (how is it that nonspecific foreigners are thought to need these things)?

Wicker Basket for bread generally - the elongated-rugby-ball loaves with about 5 different grains in them will last a week or more in the fridge (if you don't have them slice it) and are near as good as bread can get.
BE AFRAID - BE VERY AFRAID etc.
Thanksgiving, Halloween, Christmas & other such holidays become popular because they are 'western', and 'western' is confused with 'modern', here and in many places - as is, sometimes, Christianity. 'Modern' and 'progress' are also confused, despite the fact that it has been 'modernity' and 'Progress' (the latter concept very much related to Abrahamic religion), under globalizing/globalized capitalist relations of production, that have led to nations armed to the genocidal/mutually-suicidal teeth, and to irresponsible and probably irreversible damage to the planet and therefore to the very possible extinction of humanity and the remaining other species.
So I think we might as well celebrate Halloween everywhere, as it's more fun to harmlessly scare people by dressing up as the devil or Maggie Thatcher or somebody, before we all bow out & collectively leave The Big Stage.
P.S. I'm tired of reading that threads are locked - do cops come & tell you to do this, or are you self-censoring?.

Not quite what you'd call a jumping place, but not bad at all for rather standard US-type meals, not overly expensive, and with a really good salad bar that's cheap, or free with most dinner dishes after 5:30PM. You can get a bottle of beer or even wine if you really want to, but I've never seen anybody do it - maybe that's just to take out. Chinese Christian run, and they hire people with physical disadvantages, who are pleasant and helpful. Frequented by foreign (mostly North American) Christians and Chinese Christians - was started by a Canadian couple associated with Bless China (previously, Project Grace), who are no longer here, but no religious pressure or any of that. Steaks are nothing special, and I avoid the Korean dishes, which I've had a few times but which did not impress me.
As a shop and bakery, it's very good bread at reasonable prices, of various kinds (Y18 for a good multigrain loaf that certainly weighs well over a pound. Other stuff too, like granola and oatmeal that is local, as well as imported things, including American cornflakes and so forth, which some people seem to require.
Large portions, seriously so with the pizza, which is Brooklyn/American style, I guess. Convivial, conversational, good place to drink with good folks on both sides of the bar, especially after about 9PM.
Too bourgeois.
Really good pizza and steaks. The wine machine fuddles me when I'm a bit fuddled, & seems unnecessary. Good folks on both sides of the bar.
Ain't no flies on Salvador's.

Posted byHcamez, I get your point, I'm just saying that it is important to watch this sort of thing carefully, that's all. I know from experience that on SOME levels (perhaps not international aid on the scale required for the Philippines at present) it is entirely possible just to get together with friends and DO IT, no overhead (after all, what's stopping you?) - massive administrative organization guarantees neither efficiency nor waste, it all depends on the situation. On this score, I'd like to know the practical results of the efforts of both maeflor and jan-jan - may not be possible to know this, but the point is, after all, to make sure the job gets done, and nothing else.
And my best wishes to the present effort.

Posted byFor God's sake and all that is holy may they very soon do something similar on Wenhuaxiang! Ideally they'd get rid of all the cars too, but that's a problem because people with money, rather than ordinary people, are living in the apartments there, and many of them, at least, own cars.
Getting Away: Jianchuan Old Town
Posted byModern & postmodern culture, including modern & postmodern portrayals of the past, is often merely a matter of producing something to sell to people - 'success' and 'truth' tend to mean: 'whatever makes money', and/or maintains and/or legitimizes the power of those who already have it. There is a lot of past, and it is worthwhile to figure out who is selecting the items for its present incarnations, and why they are doing so as they are.
Think of any museum - ANY museum.

Posted byExcellent idea, but is the Hong Kong Red Cross the best way to make contributions? I have no criticism to make of them but it is the case that a lot of charitable organizations spend more than perhaps they should on admin, staff salaries, etc. I really think those who are organizing this important effort should perhaps check out different possible routes for assisting those in need. My general impression is that, in the Haiti relief effort, Medicins sans frontiers (Doctors without Borders) and the Cuban medical relief effort produced particularly good results with less cash going to overhead etc.
