Mangiamo Italian trattoria is very nice for special dinners. It's a little hard to find and you have to book a day in advance and it's a little pricey but as far as a special meal goes in Kunming it's certainly up there for western food. They are on trip advisor, there is a review that has address and contact numbers. Boss Steve speaks English

Forums > Living in Kunming > Kunming Taxi Service Is Very Good

If you can swing the Chinese language interface Didichuxing (Dididache) is usually way better than the normal taxi service. Clean, modern cars, usually arriving fairly quickly. No unforseen pricing. And they are hoping for good reviews which helps the quality of their service. (For the most part) I use it almost exclusively now.

Forums > Living in Kunming > Scuba divers in Kunming

I have been diving many times in Fuxian lake as well as Thailand and Bali. Fuxian lake is an ok place to practice but there is virtually nothing to see down there. Visibility is very low and it is quite cold. There are some small fishes and small shrimp as well as some rocks and water grass stuff. That's about it. There are a few local diving clubs that do group dives there from time to time as well as diving training and certification. It is always nice to dive so of course if you get the chance go for it.

As far as diving at 2000 meters there is very little different from diving at sea level technique-wise. The only major difference is that all the charts for the amount of time that you can be at certain depths have to be adjusted to compensate for the fact that when you come out of the water you still are at 2000 meters worth of pressure so the extra time for nitrogen to work itself out of your bloodstream has to be accounted for. So your time being at depth at high altitudes has to be reduced and then the time between consecutive dives and the depth you can go to have to also be calculated accordingly. The dive charts have easy ways to account for all of this. Not complicated.

Have fun!

SSeminari is living in a dream. Illegal vendors that are now starting to play loud music on the street late at night while blocking to road for LEGAL (no matter how annoying) vehicles which causes the cars to all honk endlessly at the same time creating tons of litter and undercutting the shop owners who pay crazy rent on that street. It is a residential area that sleeps early and the restaurants on the street don't make near as much noise as these kids produce. I don't believe that the people who buy their wares are there just for the market and I don't believe those people being there is of any help to any of the legal businesses. It's just annoying and rude. No one wants them there but you.

Thanks everyone for their support. We are just waiting and trying to figure out what to do. There has been a major outpouring of love from all of our friends and family keeping us from freaking out. Thanks everyone. Kris

I forgot about this little place for many years, but the other day I was in the mood for hotpot and decided to take a look at the menu. Being vegetarian I was under the impression that they wouldn't have much in the way of veggie options but to my delight they have a veggie set meal and many good options which you can order individually. I feel silly for not having checked earlier. Of course much of the menu has meat options and you can get the split hotpot bowl so everyone can have what they want. I'll definitely be adding this into the rotation. Nice little option right in Wen Hua Xiang.

Love this place. One of the best hidden gems in Kunming. The food is all clean and locally sourced and made with creativity and care. The building is interesting and if weather is good sitting outside is awesome. The homemade tofu skin is to die for as well as most of the other dishes on the menu. They also have a lot of very interesting seasonal specials that keep things interesting. Word on the street is that they aren't doing super well these days though. I hope this old favorite gets a new wave of love!

I love this place! I found it on Baidu maps last October and have been going quite regularly since then and have seen marked improvement in my archery skill. It's so nice to have a new cool thing like this to do in Kunming, and so conveniently located! (For me anyway) It is worth noting that in order to practice there you will need to take a class with the owner to get you familiar with the gear, technique and safety and that this instruction is only available in Chinese. Without this initial class he won't let you practice there unless you can somehow prove that you are already a skilled archer so you'll want to go with a friend that speaks good Chinese if you aren't fluent. 50 kuai an hour for non-members, 30 kuai for members. Membership requires putting some money in an account there, think it's around 200 kuai. The initial class is included in the hourly rate. There are an assortment of different difficulty levels of bows so beginners, kids, and people with lower strength levels can get in on the fun too. Great place for a date! Rule #1 Never, ever dry-fire a bow without an arrow in it!

Nice place, a little hard to find the first time but just give a call and they'll help you find it. Really enjoy the quiet locale and the pizza is really good. Great job!
