Forums > Living in Kunming > things to do with kids in kunming

We've had some good times at the Natural History Museum and the Yunnan Train Museum with our three year-old, but now that we have him with us 24-7, i was wondering if anyone else had some secret spots that kids enjoy and won't drive parents crazy.

my apologies to anyone who may have misinterpreted my meaning. we are all on the same side in this. my only motivation was to convince those who are not wearing masks that they should.

please don't take "false sense of control" out of context. there is an "even if" that precedes that. and even if it was proven that face masks make beer taste like water, wearing masks right now is very important.

I guess consider this a public service announcement to foreigners living in Kunming. Please wear a mask when you are outside!

Yes, I know there is little scientific evidence that masks are that useful, at least when used how most of us are using them, and they might even help spread contagions more.

But there is something else going on right now. Fear is an irrational emotion and can force irrational decisions, and now the fear has flipped. After finally feeling like we all managed to get through this catastrophe together, the pandemic has reached the rest of the world in the worst possible way. This could easily lead to a backlash against foreigners here. And when people see a foreigner out on the street without a mask it reflects poorly upon the rest of us.

Right now we all need to do our best to walk softly and help with the healing of this country. Making a statement by not wearing a mask does nothing more than increase the level of fear towards foreigners living here, especially those of us running businesses. And with the spread of fake news, this could make things very difficult for all of us.

If nothing else, masks have provided a sense of control for people over something that no one really has much control over. And even if this is only a false sense of control, it doesn't make it any less important.

Come on now, ChinaNow has a very good point and we would all be better off if ChinaNever never existed. Know that most foreigners who live in China are here because they love it. And most are very respectful. However, I agree that there are plenty of foreigners who do nothing but complain about life here, but they are really the minority. Unfortunately, the ass holes stick out more than the peaceful ones and therefore become the representatives of all of us. I encourage all foreigners to go back to the roots of why they are here. And go out of your way to be as respectful to everyone as possible. No matter how long we stay, we are only guests. This is not our country, and we should not let that fact make us feel as if we have more freedoms than we would back home. As one of the owners of Salvador's I encourage everyone to take what has happened to our restaurant and let it become a transition point for the foreign community. Bad actions reflect upon us all.

P.S.- now that we have been let back into our restaurant, I firmly believe that we were not the intended target and that the bomber was on his way somewhere else. Let's all just be thankful that no one, foreign or Chinese, other than the culprit was hurt.

I am one of the owners of Salvador's and was just outside at the time of the attack. First, I want it clear that never has Salvador's used gas canisters. It is illegal in our part of the city and we have gas lines in the building that we use so would never have the need for canisters. Second, I want everyone to know that all of our staff and customers are unhurt and physically healthy. The bomber, however, is no longer with us. I do not wish to discuss the nationality of the bomber at present, but I can only assume that it will be clear in the news tomorrow. We are shaken beyond words and can only wish you all a safe and happy holiday. Peace

I'm leaving this review for one of my staff. She just return from Dali and fell in love with this little restaurant in Dali. Very nice owners cooking up delicious and healthy Chinese cuisine with an open kitchen and local "organic" ingredients. I'll have to try it out myself next time.

If you're looking for a slightly higher end place serving local foods in a nice outdoor atmosphere, you'll dig this place

I'm disappointed in myself for even considering giving this place another chance. I wanted to give my 4-month old a chance to see some live animals and I was sure that there was no way that the Kunming Zoo was as bad as it was 15 years ago. Somehow it was worse. It's disgraceful that with all of the changes that this city has undergone in the last two decades that this zoo still lacks any sense of decency or morality.

At nailer and tallamerican, I'm sorry to hear about your recent experiences. We wash everything with purified water and make all of our food fresh daily from whole ingredients in order to avoid any problems. We will review our procedures to assure that we continue to provide the safest and healthiest menu options possible. I hope you'll give us another try and I'd be happy to buy you a coffee if you are around any morning.

@GoKunming, it would be nice if there was a zero star option for reviews so that business owners can contribute without having to rate ourselves. I kind of feel like a d-bag giving myself stars 1-5. For some reason I settled on 4 as the least douchey ;).
