Forums > Living in Kunming > things to do with kids in kunming

We've had some good times at the Natural History Museum and the Yunnan Train Museum with our three year-old, but now that we have him with us 24-7, i was wondering if anyone else had some secret spots that kids enjoy and won't drive parents crazy.

my apologies to anyone who may have misinterpreted my meaning. we are all on the same side in this. my only motivation was to convince those who are not wearing masks that they should.

please don't take "false sense of control" out of context. there is an "even if" that precedes that. and even if it was proven that face masks make beer taste like water, wearing masks right now is very important.

I guess consider this a public service announcement to foreigners living in Kunming. Please wear a mask when you are outside!

Yes, I know there is little scientific evidence that masks are that useful, at least when used how most of us are using them, and they might even help spread contagions more.

But there is something else going on right now. Fear is an irrational emotion and can force irrational decisions, and now the fear has flipped. After finally feeling like we all managed to get through this catastrophe together, the pandemic has reached the rest of the world in the worst possible way. This could easily lead to a backlash against foreigners here. And when people see a foreigner out on the street without a mask it reflects poorly upon the rest of us.

Right now we all need to do our best to walk softly and help with the healing of this country. Making a statement by not wearing a mask does nothing more than increase the level of fear towards foreigners living here, especially those of us running businesses. And with the spread of fake news, this could make things very difficult for all of us.

If nothing else, masks have provided a sense of control for people over something that no one really has much control over. And even if this is only a false sense of control, it doesn't make it any less important.

We accept donations for Heart to Heart at Aling Crafts around the corner from Paul's Shop continuing down the alley on the left. If donating used clothes, Heart to Heart has asked for mostly cotton, linen or other natural fabrics.

Xiangrong has done amazing work as have her workers and volunteers. As the tides of urbanization continue to rise, it's encouraging to know that some are working to lead others to higher ground.

zhangfeng itself is interesting for its mix of achang, jingpo, dai and burmese cultures. there is a jingpo park called munao zong ge that throws down some crazy festivals, especially during new year and water festival. there is also a mafia-run casino there just across the border, but there have been enough disappearances there that it should probably be avoided. on top of that, the area is plagued with heroin addiction. ruili is nearby and more set up for tourism.

shangrila farms is their brand name and i don't think they are trying to misrepresent anything by carrying this name into their coffee line.

they mostly sell their products in beijing and shanghai, and as one of the owners of salvador's, i thought it would be a good idea to have a place to retail their products locally. i like their products and i like what they have done within the farming communities. pay a visit to the farmers they work with and ask them how they feel about it.

salvador's has no economic ties with gokunming (other than we pay for a banner advertisement) and sales of shangrila farms products in no way could benefit gokunming. the gokunming guys have to pay for their organic coffee too. i can only assume that gokunming thought the brand alone was interesting enough for an interview. and the above posted web link shows that gokunming's address is in wenhua xiang but is not salvador's address. we are wenhua xiang #76.

anyone who knows the people of salvador's and those of gokunming would find all of this unfounded conjecture rather amusing; but if you'd like to discuss it in person some time, i'd be happy to and am easy to find.

These were glaciers, therefore they were there in the summer and in the winter. Where once Yulong Snow Mountain was capped with snow all year round, it no longer is. You can ask any local about their mountain, and they will tell you it is no longer the same.

I'm leaving this review for one of my staff. She just return from Dali and fell in love with this little restaurant in Dali. Very nice owners cooking up delicious and healthy Chinese cuisine with an open kitchen and local "organic" ingredients. I'll have to try it out myself next time.

If you're looking for a slightly higher end place serving local foods in a nice outdoor atmosphere, you'll dig this place

I'm disappointed in myself for even considering giving this place another chance. I wanted to give my 4-month old a chance to see some live animals and I was sure that there was no way that the Kunming Zoo was as bad as it was 15 years ago. Somehow it was worse. It's disgraceful that with all of the changes that this city has undergone in the last two decades that this zoo still lacks any sense of decency or morality.

At nailer and tallamerican, I'm sorry to hear about your recent experiences. We wash everything with purified water and make all of our food fresh daily from whole ingredients in order to avoid any problems. We will review our procedures to assure that we continue to provide the safest and healthiest menu options possible. I hope you'll give us another try and I'd be happy to buy you a coffee if you are around any morning.

@GoKunming, it would be nice if there was a zero star option for reviews so that business owners can contribute without having to rate ourselves. I kind of feel like a d-bag giving myself stars 1-5. For some reason I settled on 4 as the least douchey ;).
