Forums > Living in Kunming > things to do with kids in kunming

We've had some good times at the Natural History Museum and the Yunnan Train Museum with our three year-old, but now that we have him with us 24-7, i was wondering if anyone else had some secret spots that kids enjoy and won't drive parents crazy.

my apologies to anyone who may have misinterpreted my meaning. we are all on the same side in this. my only motivation was to convince those who are not wearing masks that they should.

please don't take "false sense of control" out of context. there is an "even if" that precedes that. and even if it was proven that face masks make beer taste like water, wearing masks right now is very important.

I guess consider this a public service announcement to foreigners living in Kunming. Please wear a mask when you are outside!

Yes, I know there is little scientific evidence that masks are that useful, at least when used how most of us are using them, and they might even help spread contagions more.

But there is something else going on right now. Fear is an irrational emotion and can force irrational decisions, and now the fear has flipped. After finally feeling like we all managed to get through this catastrophe together, the pandemic has reached the rest of the world in the worst possible way. This could easily lead to a backlash against foreigners here. And when people see a foreigner out on the street without a mask it reflects poorly upon the rest of us.

Right now we all need to do our best to walk softly and help with the healing of this country. Making a statement by not wearing a mask does nothing more than increase the level of fear towards foreigners living here, especially those of us running businesses. And with the spread of fake news, this could make things very difficult for all of us.

If nothing else, masks have provided a sense of control for people over something that no one really has much control over. And even if this is only a false sense of control, it doesn't make it any less important.

Most wild vegetables, especially mushrooms, won't grow in places with chemical pesticides and fertilizers. Most grow in forests and wilderness areas. But after collection, there are many things that can happen in transit and in storage before making it to the market or to the plate. But I think it is safe to say that wild edibles are usually organic, at least in theory.

I wanted to add another restaurant with wild edibles worth checking out. Underneath the Camel Bar is a restaurant called Jingpo Renjia (景颇人家), a Jingpo minority restaurant with an amazing menu. They have one dish that is not on the menu but they can make if you ask called "paguncai." It is dialect so I don't have the Chinese for it, but it is a dish made from a wild tree vegetable and beef. Really tasty.

Also, it is raspberry season and all over Yunnan, you can find little yellow, orange and red wild raspberries (called "huangpao" 黄袍 or "shumei" 树梅). Dali has some of the most accessible and if you hike up the access road behind the three pagodas, you will find plenty of wild raspberries up around 2500-3000 meters.

And for those who have yet to find satisfactory local restaurants in Kunming, I really stress getting out of the city center and checking out some of the restaurants mentioned in this article. Yiyuan Nongjiacai on Rixin Lu about one block east of Dianchi Lu is really worth the visit. Try the BBQ ribs (best in town), BBQ tofu, wild chicken (野鸡) and any of the other interesting foods you find enticing in their kitchen. This restaurant along with Haigeng Wenxing Restaurant are really proper examples of old-style Kunming cuisine.

For many of us here, there is little doubt that Chris and Matthew have made Kunming a better place. They've shown us where to find adventure, great food, interesting news and even a little culture every once in a while. Their creativity and sincerity have given many of us opportunities to see Kunming in a different and more colorful light than we would have without them. I wish both of you the best and look forward to what the new GoKunming team brings us. Cheers

Even with the terrible weather, what a sweet event that turned out to be. Thanks to all of the artists for their donations. Thanks to the musicians for their music. Thanks to Livstone and Laba for donating the spaces. And thanks to all of you for your overwhelming generosity. We raised over 20,000 yesterday which was far beyond our expectations. We will make sure that all of the donations go to provide village schools with artistic and creative opportunities that they would otherwise not receive. Kunming rocks.

I'm leaving this review for one of my staff. She just return from Dali and fell in love with this little restaurant in Dali. Very nice owners cooking up delicious and healthy Chinese cuisine with an open kitchen and local "organic" ingredients. I'll have to try it out myself next time.

If you're looking for a slightly higher end place serving local foods in a nice outdoor atmosphere, you'll dig this place

I'm disappointed in myself for even considering giving this place another chance. I wanted to give my 4-month old a chance to see some live animals and I was sure that there was no way that the Kunming Zoo was as bad as it was 15 years ago. Somehow it was worse. It's disgraceful that with all of the changes that this city has undergone in the last two decades that this zoo still lacks any sense of decency or morality.

At nailer and tallamerican, I'm sorry to hear about your recent experiences. We wash everything with purified water and make all of our food fresh daily from whole ingredients in order to avoid any problems. We will review our procedures to assure that we continue to provide the safest and healthiest menu options possible. I hope you'll give us another try and I'd be happy to buy you a coffee if you are around any morning.

@GoKunming, it would be nice if there was a zero star option for reviews so that business owners can contribute without having to rate ourselves. I kind of feel like a d-bag giving myself stars 1-5. For some reason I settled on 4 as the least douchey ;).
