" I don't know why they never install these, because they only cost about 5RMB at the local plumbing store."

You've answered your own question. They cost about 5rmb, money which could otherwise not be spent.

"Arguments about China and capitalism are interesting but largely irrelevant in this case. GoKunming as far as I know is owned by Americans and Europeans so they can remove the ad. I hope and expect they will do so."

This is close to my original point. Given how politically correct the mods are I'm surprised they are happy to allow this particular ad on their site...

In terms of New Zealand the regulation states that

" if you do have a current overseas driver licence, you can drive using that for a maximum of 12 months from the date you arrive in New Zealand. (Note: if your overseas licence or permit isn't in English, you must carry an accurate translation.

Each time you visit New Zealand, you can drive for a further 12-month period on a valid overseas licence, as long as you stay for no more than a year at a time"

Several years ago I had a motorbike accident. Though the accident itself was 100% the other party's fault I didnt posses a current Chinese motorbike licence at the time. According to PRC law I was required to spend 15 days in the cooler, but possibly out of sympathy, though more likely because they didnt want the hassle of all the paperwork, the traffic police were looking for any reason they could find to get me off the hook. At one point they told me that if i had been in the country for less than 3 months then my overseas licence would be acceptable to ride in China. I have not heard this since and am really not 100% sure if this is in fact correct, though they did show me the regulation on the traffic departments own intranet site.

What a charming ad, sounds like just the sort of place I'd like to send my kids. Actually I'm quite surprised the mods are OK with this, given their penchant for editing, deleting, and disappearing comments...

"China is also not a signatory to the IDP system either.

Taking lessons would be impractical due to the lack of foreign languages of most driving instructors.
There would not be much to worry about anyway, in most cities there used to be no 'on-road' driving skills test, it used to be a drive around the hard standing, hill start on the hill, and maneuver between traffic cones and obstacles."

And yet, a PRC ren is able to go to my home country and drive on their own licence, with no test whatsoever for 12 months. Leaving aside the standard of driving here, and leaving aside the fact that a very large proportion of licences here are either fake or bought, where is the reciprocity?

An eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth is what I say!

True story- I ran into blobbles in the wilds of the Tian Shan last year. We spent a few days in the mountains together, and at that time he often pondered aloud how much he wanted to cook up some marmot soup, an animal which is also known to have a high incidence of rabies. He eventually left the hills unsated.

It makes me wonder what really did happen to those that raccoon...

Babs' pizza is not bad at all, and Im not exactly sure how it could be swimming in oil even if it tried.

"In January 2012 we ended up with a lazy cook that produced very inconsistent dish quality, one day good, the next terrible, especially obvious on Pizza. Because it was just before Chinese New Year we could not fire him without problem staffing the kitchen."

Interesting that you made the decision to serve often "terrible" food, which people had to pay for presumably, rather than just close the kitchen until you could find a cook that didnt serve terrible fare. If I were you, and having been to your establishment once I speak with limited experience, I'd be extremely grateful with the 4 stars you already have

Is this place new, has it just changed to a fantastic new menu, or are there other forces at play here?

Any old timers or Michelin- rated French chefs who have recently moved to KM been here?

"chongzijia" would it be wrong of me to assume you had a relationship with this guesthouse? If so don't you think you should state this up front, and possibly abstain from giving a star rating?
Actually I think if you pay for an ad you are able to write an intro for your business...

Otherwise your review may appear to be slightly disingenuous? These reviews have low enough credibility as it is. Just a thought.

I went there over the winter. Beer was nice and cold but the bar appeared to have no roof. Perhaps it has one now...
