Forums > Travel Yunnan > 昆明不文明 but some people here have the warmest hearts

@jason - Haha. Apparently, neither do the police, or any of the other people or hotels that I asked. If it were so simple don't you think I would have already done it? Neither can the several Chinese apps that I use on my phone find somewhere suitable. Like I say, I managed quite well in several other Chinese cities on my way to Kunming. Maybe you'd be so kind as to list some that don't have unnecessary Covid restrictions/requirements AND that welcome foreign passport holders.

P.S. 0 posts? I'm honoured to be your first post.

Just arrived back in Kunming after a few years in other parts of China. Of all the places I've been, this is the only one where it's near impossible to get a hotel for the night (even after the Police came out to help). Foreigners aren't welcome to travel here. In their defence of this place,

the Police tried to help and the receptionist at the Vienna hotel on Baiyun lu is letting me sleep on the sofa in reception (police approved). They even gave me a blanket. Pity I forgot the mosquito spray and earplugs!

I totally agree. Getting a property loan there as a foreign might be a challenge. I bought there in my Chinese partner's name alone for that very reason. You can later change the name on property ownership papers after the loan is paid off. It's also worth remembering that those with a local Lijiang hukou have access to a far wider range of loans and get favourable terms.

Look outside old town area. There can be a significant difference in price for property that's still within walking distance of everything. Renting land (20 years +) and building is also still an option there that you might want to consider.

In any case, there's more to life than money. Best of luck!

So they can now beat policemen along with the poor and anyone not 'connected'. Strange then that they appear frightened to challenge the relatively affluent illegal sellers on Wenhua Xiang. Maybe they're afraid that they might beat the son or daughter of Li Gang...

i went up to the cemetery last week but failed to find the way over to Jiaoye Park (and on to the bamboo temple). any advice? nice ride anyway though...

The only place worth going for a beer in Lijiang. Small place with a super friendly vibe. Great relaxed hangout for locals and travellers alike.

a lovely place to stay with great views of Yulong xueshan (JadeDragon snow mountain) from the roof! Beautifully decorated and hosts that make you feel like family. A million miles better than most other places locally. I can't recommend this place enough.

i thought i'd give this place another try as my usual place was closed today. even though there is now more choice, i was not impressed by the menu. they do have an apparently good range of coffees for up to 80 kuai but even a basic latte is Y26 now. the drinks were OK but nothing special and certainly not worth the money. the place looked somehow cleaner too and was certainly busier! why have so many of the cafes in this area decided that it's fine to raise their prices by so much (in some cases almost double)? i doubt i'll be going back. the 2 stars are because it was just OK and they've obviously made some effort.

not a bad selection of stuff and some of the staff obviously know their way around a bike. however, the 'special' prices for foreigners and the fact that some of the staff will use a big hammer to fix anything keeps me from going back. you could do better.

I won't go there again. The yoghurt is tasty and the curries are usually ok (they seem to vary in quality depending on the day and time). What really annoys me is the fact that they can't comprehend that I order dishes to eat TOGETHER... if my curry arrives 30 minutes after all the other dishes it's not really acceptable. Then again, neither is the 1 hour wait for the rest of the food or the incorrect dishes being sent. By the way, why can't I sit on the 3rd floor until both of the other floors are packed full? Has it never occurred to them that I might want a quiet meal and, after all, I am paying for it!
