My guess would be that the school and/or agent are not operating by the letter of the law.

There are many workarounds that these schools/agents can do that still may allow a work visa.

@Goldie,

First, sorry about your spouse and circumstances.
Regarding the children not having passports for a while, I don't think that is an issue if that was what your were alluding to.
My first child didn't get her passport until she was about 3 1/2.
The consulate just asked what took so long. I just replied, "heh", and no issues.

Re: the issue of not reporting and getting a visa, this is a gray area even though it's on the books.

I have a friend who had this issue and did not report his child and the local police gave him the riot act, but two other big cities they lived in both told him it was no problem.

With the "hard" cop they did say they would have a fine, but when he went the next day the Main PSB office laughed it off and said not to worry.

I have read of other foreigners I assume did not register, they had to go to the PSB to get a temporary "exit" stamp which is valid for a month or two and they were allowed to travel.
I'm not sure if their children already had a hukou or not, and the laws as you know are often dependent on who you are dealing with.

IMO, I think getting the passport first, then going to get the visa or exit stamp, is the best choice and I would bet and hope that considering your personal circumstances they would just let it go.

@RedJohn,

I think you nailed it on the head.

Exercise and Diet!

It seems like an oversimplification but

it's key.

I've been here over a decade, older than you, and age is a factor for sure.
Kids can be a factor as well, I have two, had a school teaching almost all young and often sick kids, lived in a dampish atmosphere, and was often sick.

I drastically changed my diet a few years ago and the changes have been quite obvious.

As Vera stated, the pickled foods and getting your PH in your gut is key.

Perhaps this is obvious, perhaps not.

Eating out often probably won't be helpful, even if it's so tasty, i.e. street food. I used to do that all the time my first few years, but I often felt it.

My endurance has gotten lower, it takes me a few days to recover now when riding a bike or long hike or something, that definitely something to consider.

Eat healthy, get the gut in order, do that cardio, and I bet your illnesses will get better and less, and you will feel overall better.

There is a ton of material online regarding healthy living, fasting, intermittent fasting, sleep is extremely important.

Good luck!

No more corporate controlled candidates, thank you very much.
No more neoliberals, thank you very much.
No more BULLSHIT, and the same old corporate controlled candidates who do not support the working class.

NO NO NO SEAN!

Yep. I have always loved and still love the "Old Towns" no matter the naysayers and the "purists" of china travelers.
Yes, they are often crowded, overpriced, not authentic for the most part, but they have tons of personality IMO, and can always find great content for shooting pics or vids.

Hoping on what Ocean said, it's worth a visit, but if one wasn't going to the surrounding areas as well, I think I might as just visit the ocean park at Dounan, about the same, and cheaper.

Right now price is 230 per adult, add 30 yuan and it's year round pass.

kids about 150, plus 30.
kids under 110 cm free.

The biggest, and longest show is the circus, runs about an hour.

Everything Ocean stated about the park and shows is accurate.

Parking is 10 yuan and can stay overnight if adventurous?

Toilets and water close.
Food stalls and restaurants, but close at park closing time at 6 pm.

Nothing is in walking distance to the park, but there is a local market every morning, we went there to stock up on food and eat breakfast.

I think the biggest benefit of this place, if one is considering the annual pass, is the other local places to visit.

There is a large farm with a play area nearby, camping, and tiny home and trailer rentals.
Another parking lot to stay for free.

Shilin Forest and Jiuxiang Cave are close, with another large lake nearby and other farms.

Went there with the kids, was very cool.

Can rent traditional outfits, take pictures in the temple and throne, my girls loved it.
The town itself is great if you like the old traditional buildings, and they had some shows put on, music, dancing, and little skits.

For about 35 rmb each, kids free, was worth it, wished we had more time there.
