@herenow

I am dismissive to the extent that its an "either/or" and not a "pick and choose". I agree with you that complacency is bad but given what is known about the new disease, does it warrant the attention and fear attributed to it? There are already many known viruses and diseases out there that has a higher mortality rate but where is the fear and panic over those? You either promote a general hygienic living standard and be vigilant to all diseases or treat this new disease as you would normally, but don't treat it specially just because it is new and unknown.

We need to separate two perspectives here, that of the health agencies and the average citizen. The health care agencies and health care providers should be vigilant at all times regardless of any occurrences of new diseases. The sudden change in protocol at the hospitals only speaks to the general lax attitudes during normal times and that can't be.

I don't want to generalize so I will only speak of my wife and her family. There are things they do on a daily basis that are rather unhygienic, spitting in public (or just spitting in general), leaving leftover food uncovered at room temperature, not bathing for several days at stretch because "it winter and we don't sweat", etc. Now with the heightened awareness we are wearing masks even at home, she is going around rewashing every item of clothing with bleach just in case. I am willing to bet once everything blows over, they would all go back to their regular unsanitary routine blissfully unaware of the hidden dangers that is still present.

So for the average citizen, if you are unafraid of the known dangers around you, I do not see anything yet in Kunming that would warrant a departure from our daily routine. That said, I would probably be more cautious if I am currently living in Wuhan but again, I wouldn't be living in fear, I would still take walks in the park away from people and refrain from touching things, things I already do during any other flu season. Last thing I would do is to hole up in my apartment with a tinfoil hat on my head.

Bottom line, all I am saying if you are living a generally sanitary and hygienic lifestyle then there is nothing new you should be doing. If you are only going to implement hygienic practices during times of outbreaks than you are bound to get something in between, maybe something even more deadlier. Either way live your life as you normally would as you should be very cautious of catching disease Corona or otherwise,on a daily basis anyway.

@AlPage,

Had my wife take a look again and it would seem that the first link was notice sent out by the "Kunming Committee on Novel Corona Virus Epidemic", the second link was a notice by the bus company themselves, so I would go with the second one.

On further inspection, it would appear that the bus serverice is even more limiting than I first thought, there are only a total of 10 bus routes running in the city, 5 routes going to the Old Train Station and 5 going to the South Station. They all seem to originate in one of the four Bus Terminal Stations + the western bus station and end in either one of the train stations.

As for how they expect people to get to the stops, well, we all know how planning works in China during normal times, let alone during an emergency.

Let's hope the Chinese, both its people and the government, does not make the same mistake as Japan did in WWII, into thinking that Americans are too soft and lack the resolve to pursue its enemies. If nothing else, history has shown that the US have its share of vindictive, hate-filled people who love nothing more than a fight based on perceived slights, Any attack on America will not be easily forgotten or forgiven.

If you are not interested in their work or project, even 20 seconds is too long. If you are truly into what they are doing, you would love to hear every little nuance that would give you better insight.

From what I can gather, this event is meant to create a platform for people to showcase their work but because the audience might not be interested, you'd have to distill ideas into 20 second sound bites. So that begs the question, if they aren't interested in your project why would you bother pitching it to them? And as an audience member, why would you go to one of these presentations if you are not interested in what they are presenting? Anything worth doing is worth doing well, unless this is one of those "social" events where people can go and pretend they are more "cultured" than the rest of us. Then in that case, lets just go through the motions as quickly as possible so we can get to the drinking and socializing bit at the end.

We are now devolving into a culture of instant gratification, short attention spans and sound bites. Nothing is worth giving more than 20 seconds worth of discussion before moving on to the next topic. Ideas are now commoditized and pass around like fast food because we are no longer capable of in depth thought. Much like fast food, immediately after consumption it feel as if you are full, but in reality, nothing of real value was given. This is true of TED talks, it started well but soon became a money making scheme where anybody willing to pay the fee can give a "talk". Most talks given, however, are nothing more than filler that can be googled, nothing ground breaking. It has more value to the presenter for it adds a line to their list of "accomplishments" than the audience.

I'm sure this event is well meaning and has perceived value to those who participated but I wouldn't recommend patting yourself on the back for attending.

Please excuse the ramblings from this grumpy old geezer.

I wonder how that someone got to Chinainthe first place, certainly wasn't by walking or bicycling. nor by ship. And unless there is a secret trans-Atlantic or trans-Pacific railroad, not by train either.

And what kind of renewable, non-environment harming energy he is using to fire up all those electronic gadgets he uses to go online.

Ya know, my pa had a sayin, don't shit where you eat and most certainly don't complain about The smoke if you want a BBQ rib.
