Forums > Living in Kunming > WeChat/Weixin connection problems

hmm...power reboot should've worked. I can only guess a few more potential solutions - but totally guessing now.

1. Download a PING app. When you're having WeChat problems open the PING app and try to ping your primary or secondary DNS. If that works then try to ping a known IP or DNS, such as WeChat.com. The PING should theoretically time-out (fail) meaning you're DNS resolution is failing (converting a .com name into an IP address). The PING will indicate if it's a DNS issue. If you don't want yet another app on your phone - use your webbrowser to see if you can connect to a known commercial domestic site - such as gokm, tmall/taobao, etc.

2. If WeChat is running in background mode - including after a power reset (auto-start) - try cycling the app - deleting the app (NOT from the phone, but from the list of apps running in background mode).

3. Check for application and OS updates (low probability of success).

4. Clean up your app database - if you rarely or never delete conversations with pictures etc - this can cause instabilities in the app. eg my outlook app wasn't updating emails from the IMAP server correctly. I had crud dating back a few years - so I migrated all emails to the computer from 2019 and earlier - cleared the IMAP - voila - typically poorly designed and programmed Microsoft app started working consistently and normally again.

FYI - I frequently have wechat pay problems using outside wifi, so I ALWAYS use mobile WAN for WeChat pay.

If you use veepeen's they frequently leave "traces" or threads (ghosts etc) when the tunnel is terminated. Same is true for those who believe they can switch seamlessly between WIFI and 3/4/5G. This can cause your DNS to panic in confusion and stand perfectly still, doing nothing - meaning you're not connecting to anything because the DNS cannot resolve the IP addresses it's being fed - the DNS queries typically timeout (expire).

The best but not always effective way to clean up VPN and regular networking threads is to put your phone into "flight mode", to include terminating your wifi for a few seconds - take two relaxed breaths upon entering flight mode, then restart on or after the second exhale.

That should usually clean up the DNS issue.

We use <bleep bleep bleep> for our home internet and the DNS servers periodically and regularly disappear (non-reachable) - our home router also frequently resets itself. Resetting our laptop wifi (toggle it on and off) usually resolves the problem - again ostensibly because we are frequent veepeeners.

Hope that helps resolve the issue(s).

Forums > Living in Kunming > Send stuff in France

Sea freight is cheapest - but you have to pack things really well - lots of bubble wrap and double walled cardboard boxes, tape all the edges of the boxes to prevent splitting.

Remember - your stuff will be crossing the ocean(s) so wrap anything that's susceptible to salt air corrosion - small electronics should go into ziplock bags.

Finally - sea freight - you should expect your freight to be handled as though gorillas were playing catch and football with your freight. Insure it and take dated pictures of anything valuable. You MAY be liable for VAT in your home country.

Best and cheapest place to ship sea freight is ChinaPost.

Forums > Living in Kunming > Increased anti-foreigner sentiment?

My Chinese business contacts frequently poke me (physically) and semi-jokingly tell me "USA (or American) go home" (qinglish for Yankee go home).

They're generally patriotically displeased with the USA's attempted blame narratives. Difficult to explain this spastic finger pointing is a pervasive and persistent cultural thing...in most cultures...

Thanks much for the ad, sponsored or not. I've been meaning to drop by Igor's since he opened - so thanks for the reminder. Difficult to find authentic (aka not laden with a kg of sugar) French patisseries, so hope I find the culinary delight I seek (wait for the review).

I found Beijing Yingke through their ad on the gokunming website.

I recently used Beijing Yingke to take care of a rather complicated real estate transaction. After finally gathering all the required documents as specified - we actually managed to successfully complete the entire process in a single visit with no requirements for "additional documents" or "extra procedures".

The attorneys were polite, tolerant of infinitely many questions, professional, courteous, and most of all - professional and competent.
The law firms fees were an acceptable increment above local fees, to account for the multi-lingual requirements.

Most importantly - the requested transaction was completed on the first pass with no additional documentation or procedures - which is a stunning accomplishment and nod towards Beijing Yingke's professional knowledge in this sector.

Five Star rating - highly recommend.

Just stopped by Wicker Basket Beichen again to stock up on frozen pizzas, frozen pies (chicken, beef), cheese, and sliced ham (ask them to slice it for you). Love this place - simple decor, polite helpful nice staff - nothing fancy - but gets the job done.

Finally got around to using Salvador's delivery service - tried it out on the chicken burrito and their bag of nacho chips. Delivery was flawless despite being a bit out of area (≥4km) and the food was still warm.

First experience - excellent (5 stars).

Excellent as always - even with long distance delivery. Now if only the online menu was expanded a little (like the chicken strips...hint hint hint...nudge nudge...wink wink).

Just stopped into Prague Beichen for dinner a few nights ago - and I'm shocked at how good their food is - five star international hotel quality. Even the fruit-based drink was made from genuine fruit - as opposed to the usual domestic fare of fruit syrup with chunks of fruit added. The food was well-presented and "plated".

The restaurant itself has had a major overhaul and now occupies both the ground floor and the second floor - well illuminated without being blinding, wide open and airy space (2nd floor), nice attentive but non-intrusive service, and reasonable prices for excellent cuisine.

Will absolutely return several times more, to savor and experience other menu items.

A pleasant surprise and culinary delight - great place for a date or even a quiet business meeting. Excellent atmosphere.

Excellent coffee, tea, and simple meals - to include waffles and various incarnations of sandwiches. Ground floor is NO SMOKING, second floor (where they hide the bathrooms), SMOKING.

Extraordinarily popular place - beautiful location, typical service for Kunming - which means when it's good, it's stellar, when it's bad - it's terrifying - so they have a quality consistency problem that's reflected in the various staff and shifts.

However - it's still a great place to meet, hang out, chill, relax, etc. Just remember to DIY (do it yourself) most of the time.
