Rereading it I see it's your buddy in UK using gmail so actually not sure now, duh!
Maybe the firewall doesn't like the gmail address? Best guess and is a guess.
Just remembered my old gmail account so I tried w/without VPN and it's definitely a firewall issue as it works with VPN but not without.

Buying an Apple worked out best for me in my experience. I've got the UK app store installed on it so it's pretty much a UK phone on a Chinese network to me.
Whereas when I first came to China I bought a Chinese brand windows phone (it was a good price) that gave me nothing but hassle and became something that's somewhere at the bottom of a cupboard full of other rubbish stuff.
Being Gmail maybe there's a current 'google issue' with it. Did you try sending it using a VPN?
Isn't the temporary residence permit just another category of visa?

Posted byOne of the starting requisites has to be the ground samples in any plan for a subway line and then making any problems part of the planned time. Or maybe I'm just being silly, sure a qualified Chinese engineer would know best by just starting digging and hope for the best.
When they do finish though, this will be so great for the city and me :o)
