Kunming here ranks 15th in China, based on this index. But I guess everyone has different priorities. Personally, I'd rank Kunming far ahead of congested dirt hole cities like Beijing anytime, but someone else might have different priorities.

I've seen Keats, Huayang and Robert's school and found that for me, it really boils down to the individual teacher. I can't really say that the school has much of an influence here.
Robert's was a little run down, so I wasn't satisfied with hygiene there. Huayang is really new and nice, but until the new subway station opens next year it's a little inconvenient to reach. So I'd probably recommend KEATS, although it might be a bit more expensive than the other two.

I personally know a PhD who wrote his thesis on a very sensitive topic and did research in Yunnan on a simple language study visa. Perhaps that might be a more viable option?

The information flow is unreliable at best - only high speed train tickets are centrally registered, even bus tickets or airplane tickets aren't in a complete database as of yet. That's why we still have to fill out the arrival card every time before entering China.

However, some people use them for gambling and hope for making money quickly, rather than invest conservatively and apply proper risk management techniques. Like this, they can lose a lot if not all of their money, which causes really sad situations.
If bankers do that because they know that they get a high bonus if they win and lose nothing if they lose, it causes a moral hazard harms society. This might be, as you call it, sociopathological behavior. To prevent this, most banks changed their bonus schemes after 2008 and deferred paying bonuses so that losses caused by sociopaths can be recollected from their accrued bonuses.
All in all, futures are not the problem - insufficient risk management and wrong incentive structures are. In the end, this boils down to a lack of education of many bank managers who don't understand important statistical concepts - like kurtosis ;)
