Upon hearing about those infamous credit card collectors in China, I've grown interested in the credit market here.

Does anyone know the requirements and procedures for Chinese (and, possibly, foreigners residing in China?) to get a local credit card? Are there national debt registries or the like? How is credit worthiness assessed?

Thanks, a lot!
I've been at Prague Cafe and Slice of Heaven myself (but only for food never for dessert or, well, pastry). I've never heard of Wicker Basket. Definitely also going to check it out myself the next time I make it to Kunming!

A Chinese friend of mine living in Kunming would really like to know what desserts in the west taste like. Unfortunately, he doesn't have money for traveling abroad (and also doesn't know English for that matter).

So I'm wondering, is there any place in Kunming where he could get authentic western desserts? He's especially interested in french Éclaires, as he saw some online.

In Chengdu I got lucky at Walmart - does the Walmart in Kunming have good & fresh desserts available?

Thanks for the answers.

Her parents don't have a hukou, as far as I am concerned. Both are HK citizen and fall under a different regime.

But judging from your answers, we will probably either have to figure out how to get her family's company to be able to employ foreigners or have to see how much we would need to invest to get a visa for investment.

Does anyone know the minimum for investment visa in Kunming? Assuming it is sector based: We are in finance, but we might bend the purpose of our company (say, real estate or technology) as we often deal with alternative investment.

@Alien: Futures provide liquidity. This helps people who want to sell to find a matching buyer on the market - thus, it's helping society and the economy.
However, some people use them for gambling and hope for making money quickly, rather than invest conservatively and apply proper risk management techniques. Like this, they can lose a lot if not all of their money, which causes really sad situations.
If bankers do that because they know that they get a high bonus if they win and lose nothing if they lose, it causes a moral hazard harms society. This might be, as you call it, sociopathological behavior. To prevent this, most banks changed their bonus schemes after 2008 and deferred paying bonuses so that losses caused by sociopaths can be recollected from their accrued bonuses.

All in all, futures are not the problem - insufficient risk management and wrong incentive structures are. In the end, this boils down to a lack of education of many bank managers who don't understand important statistical concepts - like kurtosis ;)

Style wise, it's just another Sofitel.
The food is very average, same like what you get everywhere else around Kunming.
However, the prices are enormous - even compared to Europe. Sofitel Kunming charges more for a coffee than what Sofitel in Luxembourg, Istanbul or other large cities charge.
In addition, they have the audacity to charge a service charge on top of the advertised price.

It took me a while to cool my mood as the air conditioning is too weak as well.
Needless to say, you won't ever see me there again. If you want a nice western hotel in Kunming, go to the Intercontinental down at Dianchi.
