Forums > Living in Kunming > What if China became the only superpower

Very few countries can only take care of themselves, because they are dependent on imports and exports (of raw materials, goods and services) from other countries.

It is in these countries interest that other countries around the world are stable and trustworthy to provide these things, and the infrastructure to go with it.

Then there are some people who believe that certain things are just right things to do, even if there isn't any obvious measurable benefit for it.

For a long time China above any other country was dependent on its exports, and it might still be a backward nation (also economically) without that role.

Without its exports, China may also be cleaner and greener country, but maybe the lack of employment opportunities for millions of people would have caused enough social instability to overthrow the government. Or a tighter noose akin to DPRK.

Probably not a big deal in practice, but letter of law would probably prevent most foreigners from doing this kind of renting business (however small) legally in China without proper permits.

After all, it would be income derived from and within China.

In extreme poverty, people will even limit survival to that of their own person.

This has been reported, for example, from DPRK prison camps with family members turning on each other to survive.

In today's China you cannot make this comparison to DPRK, but China's history has left its marks in people's behavior today.

If I interpret Mike correctly, he is referring to general attitude of average Chinese person toward other human beings, nature, and generally everything other than himself and his immediate family.

For long time China was poor country, and it still reflects in many parts of the society. One is, that average Chinese will always put his own survival and benefit first.
