Rather, the issue is about the broadcasting band to have data connection on. May not easy to know that. Possibly the bands of that phone are marked on the box. On Wikipedia there's a page about all basebands of carriers around the world.
If you use Unicom you are more likely to be able to use it outside of China compared to China mobile.

It is simply not true that organic products are nowhere to be found in Kunming.

In over a year I have been living in an area, north of town, twice I saw in my block people advertising delivery of organic vegetables in boxes on a weekly basis.
Seldom I go to this good organic shop j.map.baidu.com/fkNx5 which sells the usual variety of honey, rice etc, eggs, excellent soapberry laundry powder and shampoo and vaious roots and Chinese foodstuff. On wednesday and saturday mornings they should also sell vegetables, I was told.
There's a smaller one of this type between the second French cafè and Cantina, by a vegetarian restaurant. And in general, by vegetarian/Buddhist restaurants something can be found.
Around here j.map.baidu.com/0uZx5 cosmetics and organic washing up liquid can be found in the best houseware shop you can find downtown.

It's just hard for foreigners to get their way around here and find these few, precious places. But with some time and patience, almost all can be found - also without the lazy Taobao but not to forget with the priceless help of Metro!

If the local CS community was more active, you could have let your wife joining a few meetings where she could have had the chance to meet both local hosts and temporary surfers, but in KM this is not the case. Probably only 2 meetings were organised in one year until now.

I had 3 or 4 great surfers, all foreigners. And probably the best was one without any references! But you can defenitely incurr into less nice ones, as everywhere else. Aiming at hosting surfers of an older age and with experience is a good start.
