The way I and many fellow westerners see it, children do not belong to their parents. All parents need to do is love their children and give them the skills to look after themselves, they don't need to control their lives once the child has enough skill to live their own life.
There is something very nice about close knit Chinese families. Where I object to it is when parental disapproval gets in the way of love. A friend of my girlfriend has fallen victim to this. Because she wasn't from the same city and was 2 or 3 years older than him, her boyfriend's parents disapproved of their relationship. She is now going to marry another man, despite still loving the first guy and he perhaps still loving her. Tragic.

Posted byNot a twitcher myself but I've seen/heard some interesting birds in Ma Liao He Park 马料河公园, a usually quiet(ish) park following a slow flowing river with lots of reeds and ponds. There is a dam with a lake behind it at one end too.

Posted byChina is the only country in the world where all pavements ('sidewalks' for the Americans) have those annoying textured paths for blind people to follow. In 5 years in China, I have never seen a blind person using them. When you add in the trees every 5 metres, the high kerbs, and the public bikes parked everywhere, it's sometimes quite difficult to walk, especially with a pushchair. But these are mere nitpicks compared with the tragic destruction of the beautiful old style neighborhoods all around China. There are hardly any left.
