Forums > Living in Kunming > European football leagues, Chinese web streaming

I can report that the stream quality is pretty good, except for 'ghosting' i.e. when the ball moves very quickly, it becomes slightly transparent, slightly unerving, but otherwise the streams have been smooth on all 5 or 6 games I checked out yesterday. As well as the Premier League which I paid for, I could also access a DFB (German) Cup match and CSL (Chinese Super League) matches, but only with Chinese commentary and almost no stadium sound (why do they do that?).

just bought my Premier League season pass on PPTV thing on my xiaomi box (connected to my TV) and only cost 258rmb. A steal for 380 matches (though of course many are at the same time so can't watch all of them), but even if I only watch one game a week it'll be a bargain.

Forums > Living in Kunming > Carrefour Giving Up On China

Walmart delivers a similar experience to Carre Four (crowded and claustrophobic underground mazes) but with lower prices. Walmart has also introduced self scanning payment machines so you don't need to queue up to pay, takes only a minute. And I hate the way that Carre Four give you about 4 or five pieces of paper and stupid little stickers for every transaction. It slows the payment process down for everyone and frankly is a waste of paper and ink.

Got to agree with JanJal, as depressing as it is. Many of the current grandparent generation don't have a clue how to look after children. Apart from setting a bad example by smoking, spitting, and littering, some also often think it's fine to beat their grandchildren. One day my wife's father arrived home on his ebike minus his grandson. Said grandson had fallen off the back of the ebike somepoint on the way home. The grandson was found largely unharmed, but needless to say, Grandpa was relieved of childcare duties after that.

Don't take the electric buggies at Wanfenglin, that's the mistake we made! They just whizz you around on a quick loop at extortionate cost. Hire a bike and you can explore where you want at your own pace.

In the UK and probably many other 1st world countries, smoking has been reduced greatly by attacking it from all angles. Huge amounts of tax to pay for the damage it does (and encourage smokers to cut down), huge warnings on the packets, plain packaging, total smoking bans inside public places (which includes bars and nightclubs). It's working. In my generation it is unusual to smoke, and all smokers I knew either gave up or try periodically to give up.
But the UK is a very orderly, polite, rule following country. In China people only follow rules if (1) that's what the majority are doing and (2) they are likely to be caught and heavily fined (i.e. more than 100) for breaking them. Tell the police that they can keep half of the fine money, and watch them get to work!

its illegal to use a prostitute, but not illegal for a woman to sell sex. In other words, the police come down hard on customers, but leave the prostitutes themselves alone

a very pleasant park with a tall pagoda you can climb and take photos of the city if you wish. Roses in summer, blossom in spring, nice lawn to sit on, bbq areas.

Recently the food seems to be better. Decent steak at a decent price, decent pizza, some decent wine, and the music is more suitable these days (Rammenstein wasn't the right mood music for Cantina)!

Had lunch - grilled chicken on top of mashed cuttlefish and a salad. The chicken was tasty and well cooked, and there was plenty of meat/fish to fill up even a hungry person. The salad was overdressed and nothing special - I won't order one next time. The service is a decent imitation of what you might find in the west. A large menu of food and drink. A nice civilised place to go for food or drink, but some of the dishes (i.e. the steaks) are very pricey. You could easily spend 300rmb+ per person here. Equally, it is possible to have lunch for under 60rmb per person (as we did). Warning - the bottle of water on each table costs an eye watering 48rmb! Don't be a sucker by opening it!

Went for a spot of lunch. Best pizza I've had in Kunming by some distance. In fact, one of the best pizzas I've ever had - quality ingredients, thin base, cooked to perfection. Sashimi salmon tasted very fresh and was well presented. The drinks are expensive, and one of the waiters was letting the side down by being a bit scruffy and impolite (hence not 5 stars), but definitely go and try the pizza.

Not bad. Pizza base was a little thick for my taste. Great selection of craft beers in the fridge, a few beers on tap, and well priced mixed drinks and cocktails. Staff were pleasant. A 14" pizza is the perfect size for two people, and very reasonably priced at 45-70RMB. Beware that the English menu, whilst written in perfect English, is not necessarily accurate. I ordered the 'local one' pizza expecting pepperoni and mango but got neither. The waitress explained that was a mistake on the menu. Would be nice if the menu corresponded with what you get on the plate! Hopefully this will get sorted.
