yeh as I said, you are talking about Fried (pronounced Freed) and Joost. They were Moondog co-owners for a while I believe. Later Fried co-opened The Park and The Turtle. As you correctly say, they have both long since returned to their home countries.

thanks for sharing those Tiger, the line 5 map is interesting as it shows the intersections with other lines, present and future. It's a shame that the subway wasn't around when I lived in that area, would have made certain journeys much quicker and easier. Oh well!

Great, thanks for the info Wendy! Btw it's KeLe Village (yes, like Coke!) not KeKe. There is nothing really at KeLeCun yet.. just a station in the middle of farmland haha, no doubt it will get developed in the next 5 years or so. More subway lines are badly needed for Kunming to develop, we can't all drive everywhere all the time.

I've used CCB for about 8 years and as Chinese banks go they're not bad. We've also got accounts with BOC and ICBC but the experience in both is not as good as CCB. Mind you, these days in the cashless society it's very rare that I go to the bank. I subscribe to the text message service, for 30RMB a year, I always know exactly how much money is in my account and have a record of all the ins and outs, no wasting time logging in or out of an app, no forgetting your passwords etc, just an instant text message every time you pay or receive money, the convenience and peace of mind is well worth the 30rmb imo. I don't use the online banking app so can't comment on that, on the rare occasions I need to transfer large sums, I go to a machine.

I have my doubts about them being religious extremists. Uighur Islam is generally moderate. Many Uighurs drink alcohol, some of them even eat pork. What is clear is that they despise the Chinese for not allowing them passports, invading their lands, and erasing their culture. Uighur children have to do their exams in Chinese, a completely foreign language to them, and so unsurprisingly most do terribly. They lack the business contacts in the east to do business in Xinjiang, whilst Han migrants make a fortune. They have no chance in life from the beginning to the end. Perhaps their escape from China failed, they knew they would soon be arrested, so they decided to go down in a hail of bullets rather than quietly. But that wasn't these men; 'The three men did not physically participate' so the guys being executed didn't kill anyone...

17 will replace existing ziplines, which Li characterized as "dangerous"

I wonder how many people have died building and using ziplines compared with how many people die building and using bridges?

a very pleasant park with a tall pagoda you can climb and take photos of the city if you wish. Roses in summer, blossom in spring, nice lawn to sit on, bbq areas.

Recently the food seems to be better. Decent steak at a decent price, decent pizza, some decent wine, and the music is more suitable these days (Rammenstein wasn't the right mood music for Cantina)!

Had lunch - grilled chicken on top of mashed cuttlefish and a salad. The chicken was tasty and well cooked, and there was plenty of meat/fish to fill up even a hungry person. The salad was overdressed and nothing special - I won't order one next time. The service is a decent imitation of what you might find in the west. A large menu of food and drink. A nice civilised place to go for food or drink, but some of the dishes (i.e. the steaks) are very pricey. You could easily spend 300rmb+ per person here. Equally, it is possible to have lunch for under 60rmb per person (as we did). Warning - the bottle of water on each table costs an eye watering 48rmb! Don't be a sucker by opening it!

Went for a spot of lunch. Best pizza I've had in Kunming by some distance. In fact, one of the best pizzas I've ever had - quality ingredients, thin base, cooked to perfection. Sashimi salmon tasted very fresh and was well presented. The drinks are expensive, and one of the waiters was letting the side down by being a bit scruffy and impolite (hence not 5 stars), but definitely go and try the pizza.

Pretty mediocre burgers accompanied by completely overcooked 'fries'/chips. Drafty, a bit smelly, and infested with mosquitos and noisy teenagers. Soup not bad but nothing special. Nothing French about the decor or atmosphere (there isn't any outdoor seating). Haven't tried the coffee. I hope it will close and be replaced by a decent bar or restaurant. A burger bar with the Moondog chef in the kitchen would be perfect, and with Brooklyn just a few metres away way would make a great little foreign food and drink scene!
