Forums > Living in Kunming > China is not as safe as you think.

@chicha78

I've heard similar stories here from locals as well. Could be true, you never know. China is safe, but with a country that has such a large population we would be crazy to assume that there is no crime and there are no bad people doing bad things. This is just being naive.

@tigertiger

Yes, credit card. They have good jobs as well as property to secure the card with. For a Chinese person it is quite easy to get a credit card. I would look into banks that may be able to issue second credit cards for foreign spouses with your name on it and a joint account. Not sure which banks can do that, but there must be one or two. I would suggest you ask your spouse to do some research.

I've been in China for a while and probably not as long as many of you. So far I have experienced very little crime compared to what happens back home. I feel safe walking at night and have not been robbed (yet). So overall I feel it is much better here than back home, but I am guessing if I stay longer I will eventually experience what you guys are writing about. It happens everywhere, not only in China.

I don't think Hong Kong is an option now. Most schools now will ask you to fly back to your home country, which can be quite the expense. Friend of mine just got offered a position in Shanghai with Wall Street English and needs to fly home to get his visa sorted.

The only way not to fly home now is if you are already on a working visa / residence permit and have it transferred to a new employer.
