Forums > Living in Kunming > Negociating

@liumingke1234, Your last point was so right on, i was so excited to find large jars of miracle whip at small store in our complex, i should have known better, got it home and everything about it was counterfeit, texture, smell, and taste was horrible. Will not make same mistake again.

@atomic, i also only buy limited things at WalMart or Metro that i cannot find at other places. My wife has even found if i do not shop with her at local markets the price is sometimes better. Funny thing is however i have occasionally bought fruit on the way home and got a better price from vendor who i pass daily and always smile and say hello to.

i do not mind paying fees if i know it is going to benefit local people but i fear much of it is helping the wrong people buy more and more homes and line the streets in front of these homes with big expensive cars.

@LouieK - did not mean to complain, just want others to get accurate idea of what Lijiang is like now. I prefer to stay away from crowds so when i realized how busy Lijiang old town is now i went to the quieter Shuhe area. As i said before my wife had a very successful business in Lijiang for over 10 years and loved the city. Her comments were Lijiang has changed and not for the better. I also always assumed when i visit a tourist city that when i rent a room, buy a meal or purchase items from their tourist shops that part of the price includes user taxes. I am okay with that, just concerned about fees that could not be accurately explained so my wife could understand. Many people may really like lijiang it just was not my kind of place.

Appreciate comments so far, i thought something was wrong with me i had heard so much good about Lijiang. One thing that cannot be argued about is weather however. Except for rainy season weather is really wonderful here in kunming, Dali and Lijiang. I have spent extended periods of time in wuhan which is very hot and humid in summer and very polluted, Luizhou, Nanning, Beihai, and Shenzen are very hot and have oppresive humidity from April until November, and then Sun does not shine from December until April.

@blobbles, very nice reading. I have looked at a lot of new developments in kunming and an average 2 bedroom would be 80-100sqm. That only makes your figures even more disturbing. Typically an efficiency would be classified in the 40 sqm range. I read an article recently and i am sorry i cannot reference it, but it showcased super small homes designed very effectively to utilize space so the average chinese worker could afford to purchase a home. They would be in the 20-30 sqm range and would cost less than 200,000 rmb.

@tigertiger, I see a huge problem with all the properties owned here in china as an investment. With the poor quality of construction how many years before your investment has reached it peak potential and then begins to decline. When the value starts to decline will people panic and start selling not wanting to pay for the finish costs and maintenance costs which are beginning to soar over the years. We have property now bought in new complex 4 years ago and maintenance costs are rising and talking to real estate people value of our place has risen very little since my wife bought it. Wife also owns home in building that is 20 years old and value is dropping very quickly. Read recently were most of chinese that can afford to buy the bigger homes being built now days have purchased and that units will have to be downsized considerably in the future to help future generations purchase homes. You can always say something is worth a certain value, but if their is no market for product price will have to fall? I might be wrong, but in USA people bought homes for years because it was supposedly a good investment and they said the price never falls on homes. Several people i know have lost at least 40% of their home value and millions have lost their homes entirely. Bankers for years sold the idea that a mortgage was a good investment because of the tax deduction. What a pile of bullshit that was and people bought it, now younger people in USA are refusing to purchase homes because of what happened to their parents.

@blobbles, i have also noticed all the nearly completed projects and their are no signs of anyone working on project while commuters struggle around barricades. They have made patches in road where they are working on subway in north beijing lu and yesterday i saw a small car get stuck in one of the holes left behind. Thing i have found most amusing is on numerous occasions road my bike down a small dirt road only to find a brand new stretch of 6 lane road with curbs, striped and road down it for 5-6 miles only to find it ends with a 1 lane dirt road. Asking local friends no one has any idea why the road was built and many had no idea it even existed. My biggest fear with subway is it will become as dirty as everything else in china. Would be interested in hearing if anyone else has used subways in other chinese cities and what experience has been like.

Despite delays, amazes me the speed they are able to build railroads, subways, light rail systems in this country. In my home city in USA it is taking 4 years to build light rail line 4 miles all above ground. We have 2 Amtrak trains daily, 1 east bound and 1 west bound and they regularly run 2-4 hours behind schedule. Have taken numerous trains here in china and not once have been late.

Great western dinner at a reasonable price. The salad bar is a wonderful bonus if you order a dinner meal. I like to get their early just after 5, then salad bar is especially fresh and full of all the selections. Staff are my favorite in Kunming. They are friendly and attentive, but not over bearing. Give you menu and then give you time to make a selection.

Recently i wrote a review that after eating beef burritos at Salvadors i ended up with a bad stomach ache and the last time a case of severe diarrhea. It was commented later that maybe the sour cream was a factor, and that may be true. My only dairy is milk in my coffee and i have noticed i sometimes end up with a stomach ache after drinking 2-3 cups in the morning. I make my own sour cream for tacos i make at home and will have to pay more attention to how that affects me in the future.

Metro has many things i cannot find other places, but i still find it a frustrating place to shop sometimes. Seem to frequently be out of things. For example their was very little fresh meat to choose from and actually they were out of many things and i was their just after lunch. They had no loaves of toasting bread and could not tell my wife when they would be getting more in. In looking at the fresh date on Hormel ham it had expired in September. However for first time i was able to shop all the aisles. Not filled with merchandise to be stocked or fork lifts.

To all those expecting an authentic Irish Pub come on we are after all living in China. I have eaten there several times and the burger is still the best in Kunming in my opinion. Staff is friendly and attentive to your needs. Place is not perfect but what is in CHina. Owners have been wonderful in opening up early for special events like the US Super Bowl.

Went for Pizza special tonight. Had the Barbeque chicken and it was very good. Also enjoyed an exceptionally large order of French Fries. Everything was good tonight and owners where not there.
