Thanks for the info, everyone. I'm most concerned about buying a ticket in Laos, where I don't speak the language. But if others do it, I can do it, I suppose.

Does anyone know if it's possible to take bus from Jing Hong to Luang Namtha in Laos, then another bus from Luang Namtha to Chiang Mai in Thailand?

"I wonder if any of the problems that have to do with unlicenced vendors etc. might have something to do with a (relative) downturn in an economy"

There are far fewer small markets than there used to be.

I'd love to buy jianbing or baozi as I walk to early class. I'd put my money in their pockets willingly.

I've bought food from one woman vendor for ten years now, and somehow the sky has not fallen.

I've stayed here many times over the years and been very satisfied. Central location, comfortable rooms, reasonable prices. Some might mind the noise from the Bad Monkey Bar across the street, but I've always been able to sleep. The staff is very helpful with bus tickets, excursion tickets and the like.

Does anyone know if this is still a going concern? Or destroyed by the fire?

One of my favorite places in Jing Hong! It's my landmark, the center of the hotel, restaurant, bike, etc., area. I discovered dark Beer Lao there!
