Does anybody have experience with or know of possibilities for volunteering in a Kunming hospital in any capacity? I heard that it might be possible in a teaching hospital in Kunming, but I don't know any of the details.
I'd also be grateful if anybody knows of volunteer opportunities in any other clinical setting in/around Kunming.

Bangkok Cafe on the third floor of the Kunming Zoulang (around Renmin Zhonglu and Caisheng Xiang) has it on their menu...
There is a place that people mostly just call "the tea market" - it's a sprawling place, generally empty, with tons of shops selling tea leaves, tea pots, tea sets, furniture for sitting and drinking tea...Explore the 2nd floor (2nd floor if you're American, 1st floor if you're European) areas, there are a few really good shops up there.
I believe in Chinese it's just called the 茶叶市场. It's located in the Northeast corner block of Beijing Lu and Erhuan Bei Lu Road Close to Jinshi Xiaoqu. If you look at this area on Google maps you'll see what I mean.
I went to the Horti-Expo Gardens yesterday and was totally shocked - this is the worst ripoff I've experienced in China.
I honestly can't believe that these people sleep at night charging 160 RMB to see this completely lame attraction (100 for the expo gardens, 30 for jin dian, 60 for the cable car to jin dian which you must take to get between the two places, combo ticket price 160 RMB...).
I have no idea what the Expo Gardens were like 11 years ago, but apart from some nice flowers at the entrance the place has totally fallen apart. All of the pavilions are in ruins and taken over by downscale jade markets and depressed fuwuyuan selling Chinese trinkets. The International Hall is a pathetic collection of decade-old dioramas and random Chinese products being sold at every country's display (I didn't know that Lamb's Placenta is a specialty American product!). I have the feeling that they've been playing the same cheesy toreador music on a loop in the Spanish pavilion for the past 11 years.
This place is a huge waste of space, a huge waste of water in the middle of a drought (keeping all those acres of grass looking green for a tiny trickle of tourists) and a massive waste of your time and money. Honestly, this was the most depressing place I've been in Kunming.
Jin Dian is nice - go straight there and skip this nonsense.
This is a pretty specific request, but does anyone know where to buy high quality envelopes? (Just envelopes, no paper inserts or cards needed.) They are for formal invitations, so I'm looking for something other than the thin, brown envelopes with the address lines pre-printed, and trying to stay away from pink and scented with the giant squares in the upper left corner...
I haven't been able to find anything like this and no one in the printing or stationary shops I've been in has any ideas.
Any suggestions would be appreciated!!

Has the distinction of being one of the only places in town with an elevator. Usually has hot water, and the beds and rooms generally are comfy enough. Satisfactorily clean.
Noisy at night as many rooms face the main road, and it's largely taken over by groups of ganbu doing god-knows-what until all hours - they're usually gone by morning, leaving behind only the empty pings.

I get it - maybe you've been told not to memorize people's orders instead of writing them down, or maybe you think it's impressive not to take notes...
But you know what I'd find more impressive? Getting my order right. Ever.
Salvador's has great food, but every time I eat here my food is missing something I ordered, or has something sprinkled all over it that I asked to be left out.
Seriously, just write the orders down. I won't think any less of you!

This place has a nice atmosphere - high ceiling, comfortable seating, good light. A classy-looking place, and definitely a breath of fresh air after smacking your forehead endlessly in the cafes of Wenhua Xiang and Wenlin Jie. The coffee is solid.
A word of warning: Stay away from the cakes. They are the kind that come out of a box that several cafes around here serve; at Rainbow they keep the slices in the freezer and serve them to you frozen solid on a plate. Seriously.
Getting Away: Nanning
Posted byNormally, I really like the "Getting Away" feature on GoKunming...but I feel like we might be scraping the bottom of the barrel here. I had some new and exciting noodles there - tasty, I'll grant you - but I speak from experience when I say that Nanning is the place that fun goes to die.
