Colin - the process is indeed a huge headache (the NGO I work for has just gone through it). I would suggest you contact Health Policy Initiative/RTI International and ask for their advice. I do not work for them, but know that they have been working with local NGOs to explain the new registration procedures.

Their office phone number is 0871-317-0909.

Forums > Living in Kunming > Refilling prescriptions from abroad

I'm trying to help a friend find a doctor who can refill his prescriptions originally obtained abroad (or rather, get new prescriptions for the medications he has been taking for a while). The medications he needs are:

Celexa (Citalopram HBR) 40mg (西普兰)
Concerta 36mg (专注达)
Xanax (Alprazolam) 0.5mg (三唑安定)
Ambien (Zolpidem tartrate) 10mg (安必恩)

Apparently the first two are the most important; the second two are less critical.

I've tried calling a few hospitals here on his behalf, but no luck so far - they seem confused by my request, and the fact that these prescriptions are not for me doesn't seem to help.

Does anyone know of a doctor who might be able to prescribe some/all of these medicines? My friend will be in Kunming starting next week and I would really like to be able to point him in the right direction.

Marvelon is also available - ask for 妈富隆. This is stocked in most large pharmacies in Kunming and sells for less than 20 kuai.

I know several women in KMG who have used this Canadian brand with no problem - but then again, I know lots of people who used Yasmin with no problem, so inspect the active ingredients if you know that there are particular hormonal combinations that don't agree with your body (bodyandhealth.canada.com/[...]

As an aside, if you find a particular brand that you like I'd suggest buying several boxes at once as different varieties of the pill often sell out.

Forums > Living in Kunming > Seam seal and Nikwax/good outdoors stores

Does anyone know if it's possible to buy products to spruce up my ailing hiking boots in Kunming, like seam seal and Nikwax? I know there are a ton of outdoor stores in Kunming but I haven't seen this stuff in any of them.

Actually, any general recommendations on particularly good outdoor stores would be great as well!

Normally, I really like the "Getting Away" feature on GoKunming...but I feel like we might be scraping the bottom of the barrel here. I had some new and exciting noodles there - tasty, I'll grant you - but I speak from experience when I say that Nanning is the place that fun goes to die.

Has the distinction of being one of the only places in town with an elevator. Usually has hot water, and the beds and rooms generally are comfy enough. Satisfactorily clean.

Noisy at night as many rooms face the main road, and it's largely taken over by groups of ganbu doing god-knows-what until all hours - they're usually gone by morning, leaving behind only the empty pings.

Dear Salvador's waitresses,

I get it - maybe you've been told not to memorize people's orders instead of writing them down, or maybe you think it's impressive not to take notes...

But you know what I'd find more impressive? Getting my order right. Ever.

Salvador's has great food, but every time I eat here my food is missing something I ordered, or has something sprinkled all over it that I asked to be left out.

Seriously, just write the orders down. I won't think any less of you!

This place has a nice atmosphere - high ceiling, comfortable seating, good light. A classy-looking place, and definitely a breath of fresh air after smacking your forehead endlessly in the cafes of Wenhua Xiang and Wenlin Jie. The coffee is solid.

A word of warning: Stay away from the cakes. They are the kind that come out of a box that several cafes around here serve; at Rainbow they keep the slices in the freezer and serve them to you frozen solid on a plate. Seriously.
