Forums > Living in Kunming > Driver's licence for a Yunnanese

It also makes a difference if you have an overseas drivers license. I converted mine from back home a few years ago (not sure how much this has changed in the meantime) and it cost me about RMB 180 and didn't really need to know any Chinese.

Test comprised of an eye exam and a few other basic physical tests, then a 100 question multi-guess computerised exam in English. I recommend studying before hand. The questions get a little weird in places, but you could make a few mistakes a still pass. I think the only Chinese characters I had to deal with were and .

Doubt that if you took the driving test it would require much more Chinese than that... though you would probably need to be able to understand the examiners instructions in Chinese. It's not like you would normally be reading a book while driving.

Forums > Living in Kunming > International Shipping Companies

We used AMJ Campbell International and Santa Fe together. The cost was quite a bit higher than $2450 and was full service. They came and packed everything for us and delivered everything to our door at the other end. Also took several months.. Pretty sure we wouldn't have used more than half a container either. Feeling a bit ripped off now :)

AlPage48: do you know who Wi-Can International used as their local partner? Might be cheaper to deal with them directly.

Forums > Living in Kunming > China mobile (Kunming number) roaming in HK

You pretty much always have to pay the deposit.. it is the same thing with China Unicom and the dual/triple number SIMS. Roaming charges are usually about 6RMB a minute, which is expensive, but may be worth it if you are waiting on an important call.

THe deposit money they ask for essentially works as credit on your phone. While your in HK, the money you use will be deducted off this amount. The remained can be refunded to you when you get back to China.

I think they are worried (rightly so) that people will go overseas, rack up huge bills and then just throw away the SIM card. As for the dual number SIMs, try talking to China Mobile to see if they can add the service for you. When I used to use it (I had a Macau number too) I just had them added to my existing SIM. Not sure if that is possible from Kunming though as I was running a GuangDong number at the time.

Forums > Travel Yunnan > Are turnaround visa runs possible at the China-Vietnam border in Hekou?

I've done it stacks of times at the Hekou Vietnam border (always with a Vietnam visa) and even once without a visa at the Myanmar border. Without the visa in Ruili I just talked to the guards and said that I needed to leave and come back in for visa reasons and that i didn't want to go over to Myanmar. Worked a treat. Though I prefer having the Vietnamese visa and heading up to Sapa for a night or two to get away from the city while I am down in Vietnam.

It is worth noting that the park is makes a decent place to stop along the tollway from Kunming to Dali if you are self driving and doesn't require going down the potholed road into LuFeng town.

Having seen the park in full operation though, you don't miss much by most things being closed. Growing up facinated with dinosaurs though, the museum was worthwhile even if it more or less only has Lufengosaurs' on display.

Awesome little bakery. Lots of interesting food. For every Australian out there, the meat pies smelled great, though they weren't ready for eating when I went in. Will definitely be back for those soon.
