Forums > Living in Kunming > 3G internet access better than home DSL?

Thanks ludwig. I was guessing it wouldn't work. I'll check the 12 month package.

I now live on the 17th floor and China Mobil service is lousy. Not only me, but others go to the window for mobile GSM calls. If the 3G China Unicom service is good I am thinking I will turn off the landline.

tigertiger, sorry to hear about your heart attack. I had my first one in Dec 1995, and two more by March 1996. I am 68 now and enjoy every day. You will get a lot of well intended advice most of which is worthless. My advice is get your weight down anyway that works, eating less is a start. Walking is great.

As for cooking, I find using water rather than oil works for me. If I use oil, it is usually olive oil. Plain yogurt tastes like sour cream. Very lean beef/hamburger from the Muslim guy is good. I agree with onelegged on fats and Marco Polo on grains. I chop up onion, chili and garlic and by eyeballing it, try to keep the meat, mutton, beef or pork, less than 25% of volume.

I live near Bei Chen and can give you some tips on buying stuff. Meds are a pain, I go to Beijing to get one I can't get here.

Most important thing is to be intelligent. You have to adjust somethings but not everything. Moderation works so if you like it, eat a little bit and appreciate you are still here to feel guilty once a week.

PM me if you need help or support.

@bluppfisk My Kindle Touch (not 3G) is on order and ETA is Dec 5th. I picked it for the battery life and readibility. I have about 75 books, mostly free ones, I am using with Kindle PC now.

Kindle PC is a good way to see how well Amazon has set Kindle up. I decide to buy a book and I am literally reading it in less than a minute.

I also avoid Apple stuff for 3 reasons, price, too many proprietary wrinkles, and I met Jobs once. After watching Jobs put on his act, he was a genius, but also rude, arrogant, very asshole like, I did not want spend my bucks with his company.

Project Gutenberg has Kindle friendly free books. Try Bertrand Russell, "The problem of China." The way he describes the Chinese people and culture in 1920's, you'd swear he was in China today.

3G seems faster to me too. I had heard it would be slooooow but I needed mobility so bought a 6 month China Telcom USB modem and SIM. Turns out it is faster than the ADSL line.

I am about to buy 6 months of China Unicom 3G.

Does anyone know if I can use my USB 3G modem, now China Telcom, with a China Unicom 3G SIM card?

@Ocean:

Nearly 90% of junior high school graduates continue their study. About half of them go to senior high schools, and the other half enter secondary vocational schools (Ministry of education of China, 2010a). The results of zhongkao decide whether students go to key senior high school, ordinary senior high school or vocational school. At the end of three-year senior high school study, students take gaokao, which is the entrance examination to universities. About 80% senior high school graduates are promoted to tertiary education (Ministry of education of China, 2010a). The results of gaokao decide whether senior high school graduates go to key university, ordinary university, college, or other high education institutes.

It is a start. One out of eight kids that passes the Zhongkao (中考) don't go to high school and that is a big loss to China.

Rural schools suffer from low paid teachers and a lack of books and materials. I don't know how it is these days but 10 years ago the MOE would announce budget increases Y-O-Y but actual spending would actually decline Y-O-Y. I hope the additional spending is for teachers and books.

Renovating schools means a good chunk of the money will disappear.

Good for quality, but pricey, hand tools.

Be aware they will push whatever they are selling. Some of the staff have no idea about the technical side of appliances.

I went there to buy a stove. I repeatedly told them I would be using bottled gas. They sold me a stove. When I went to my local gas guy, I learned there are at least three kinds of gas sold. Luckily, B&Q did not deliver as promised. I went back to the store and discovered they had sold me a stove they needed to be hooked up to the gas main. I got my money back.

The sales lady was almost in tears, 没有问题!I don't know if it a safety or design issue, but I would think B&Q would know and care.

Last week had an 8:45am flight.

Subway starts at 9am. I have no idea where to catch an airport express bus. Eight taxis refused to go to the airport. After almost an hour standing on Beijing Lu took a black taxi, this dude drives slower than my mother, 120 yuan.

Flight back was delayed so I learned the subway stops running at 6:10pm.

Getting a taxi back was easy, more taxis than customers. Taxi was 87 yuan including 1o yuan toll, airport to Beichen area. Yes, he took a longer route than necessary.

Kunming imagines being a gateway for international travelers. New airport but hard to get to and from it.

World Class Airport, NOT!

Tonight "Peacock", a performance by Yang Liping (杨丽萍), to begin her world tour, 8pm, 100-1680 yuan at Yunna Haigeng Auditorium.

Saw this lady perform at the Pasadena Civic Auditorium, in California, in 1995. Quite a good and interesting show.

I'm going to try to make it.

Not so good. Kimchi had a very sour taste. Other food was nothing to brag about. I don't think I would go back.
