Forums > Living in Kunming > Cheap phone advice.

In my opinion, no. I had a phone with 16G and kept bumping up against the limit. Latest android versions have a lot of features and crap apps are pre-loaded. I went to 32G internal storage and in two years same problem.

Now I have a Samsung Note 8 with 64G running android 8.0.0. I have moved every app I can to the SD card. I am using 32.3G. It shows what is labeled as "memory" of 6G with 3.5G used.

8.0.0 is pretty good at moving apps and from internal to the SD card. Sure are a lot of pre-installed junk apps that eat up space and can't be completely removed.

My advice: Pay for more internal memory and make sure the SD slot will take at least 64G or SDXC, never less than 32G or SDHC.

Wechat uses 434MB on my phone.

@JanJal is correct as to the two different modes of "residence" in China. Do not confuse them or conflate them.

They are created by different ministries for different reasons. They are two entirely different games.

@JanJal Your opinion sounds entirely reasonable to me. But in as much taxation is the government coercing you to part with money earned, and, if they can find a way to get more of your money earned worldwide cuz you choose to live in China the "green card" is not in play.

It used to be that "retirement income" from any source was not taxed in by China. With the limited information I have, I can not confirm this is still the case post reform.

Being a geezer, and accountant with two CPA sons, all of my retirement income is, with great satisfaction, tax free in the US. Going back to China is no longer attractive.

Some info on IIT Reform effective January 01, 2019

Not much new. Scroll down for China bullet points:
www.gmsasia.pwc.com/[...]

Major points:

"Not yet clear how the “5-year rule” will be affected. Could result in greater resistance to long-term
assignments due to higher worldwide tax exposures"

"Different tax systems for resident and nonresident individuals. More complicated tax compliance process going forward"

"Not yet clear on potential tax cost
impacts for foreigners enjoying the
existing non-taxable fringe benefits"

Haha "Words lose their meanings when stretched too far." I, well i am not sure that in this case (I could be wrong (or even right) or, who knows). Clearly, often I don't know (but I'm gonna comment anyway) especially after consulting my dictionary (or my thesaurus) for the longest multi-syllabic, maybe confusing, words I can find.

While this is nothing new, having it called out is.

A dozen years ago, while wandering around Hainan taking photos, I took photos of a factory spewing pollution into the air. Back in Beijing I mentioned this to a friend who was an official at the old Ministry of Environmental Protection. She said "There are no factories in Hainan." When I told her I had photos, she shook her head and repeated, "There are no factories in Hainan," adding, "There can't be any pollution in Hainan."

Problem solved, I guess.

Good for quality, but pricey, hand tools.

Be aware they will push whatever they are selling. Some of the staff have no idea about the technical side of appliances.

I went there to buy a stove. I repeatedly told them I would be using bottled gas. They sold me a stove. When I went to my local gas guy, I learned there are at least three kinds of gas sold. Luckily, B&Q did not deliver as promised. I went back to the store and discovered they had sold me a stove they needed to be hooked up to the gas main. I got my money back.

The sales lady was almost in tears, 没有问题!I don't know if it a safety or design issue, but I would think B&Q would know and care.

Last week had an 8:45am flight.

Subway starts at 9am. I have no idea where to catch an airport express bus. Eight taxis refused to go to the airport. After almost an hour standing on Beijing Lu took a black taxi, this dude drives slower than my mother, 120 yuan.

Flight back was delayed so I learned the subway stops running at 6:10pm.

Getting a taxi back was easy, more taxis than customers. Taxi was 87 yuan including 1o yuan toll, airport to Beichen area. Yes, he took a longer route than necessary.

Kunming imagines being a gateway for international travelers. New airport but hard to get to and from it.

World Class Airport, NOT!

Tonight "Peacock", a performance by Yang Liping (杨丽萍), to begin her world tour, 8pm, 100-1680 yuan at Yunna Haigeng Auditorium.

Saw this lady perform at the Pasadena Civic Auditorium, in California, in 1995. Quite a good and interesting show.

I'm going to try to make it.

Not so good. Kimchi had a very sour taste. Other food was nothing to brag about. I don't think I would go back.
