Heehee. No problem. I think most of your answers are in the posts above. I spent about 10 hours preparing for the test. I have a copy of the Q&A in English if you send me your email ("just" 90+ pages in Word format after I stripped out the Chinese). Also, a 4 page "crib sheet" I used to remind myself of the tougher Qs and As, which may help (if you can understand what I wrote). PM me with your email if you want it.

Has anyone taken the direct flight from Kunming to Dacca (assuming it's still running)? Is a visa available on arrival (for western or for Chinese both)? If not, any recommendations as to how/where to get a visa beforehand? Does it really involve a trip to BJ/SH/HK? Are there agents? Thanks in advance.

Mengzi North Station is some way from town as mentioned in the article. Unfortunately, the organised rank of buses pictured above is now a sprawl of taxis, private cars, 3-wheeled motorcycles and buses. Taxis cost about 40RMB to the city centre. Buses are 2RMB, but wait until packed full and only go to the bus station, which is still some way from downtown. The North Station is a temporary measure and locals said that the new station - more centrally located near HongHe University - is expected to be open by the end of the year. We'll see...

There is a huge new museum (HongHe Provincial) in the new town, which is worth a visit, primarily for the final section which is a great display of minority costumes, photos, tools, instruments etc.

I stayed at the HongDa JiuDian hotel (86-083-3735588) and highly recommend it. Rooms are 220RMB for a clean, quiet, well-appointed double. Staff are friendly. Breakfast is included and checkout is a late 2pm (which is great if you want to take the 3.50pm train back to Kunming). The lake and old town are 10 minutes walk away.

Price is now 100RMB for adults, 70RMB for children.
Some of the animal areas are as far as 10+km from the entrance - you can buy a hop on/off bus ticket for 60RMB per person, but there are also clearly marked walkways for those who are full of energy.

Everything inside is pretty expensive - consider bringing a picnic.

Many of the animals are in large outdoor enclosures. Some are caged. The park calls itself a safari, but this is not a "drive your car amongst the animals" thing. It's more like a decent western zoo.
There are places to handle/be photographed with animals, for a fee. Also, some kids amusements.
The animal show is free, but a waste of time (unless you love watching goats, sheep, pigs, horses etc!!).

Still worth a visit, especially for the arhat statues. The 11am vegetarian lunch is basic, but still only 10RMB. Free entry.



Prague cafe used to be my favourite cafe in Wenlin area but I went for lunch there today after a few months away and it's really gone downhill (new owners?). The menu was a photocopy, the food was lacklustre and much more expensive than before, the decor was dull and the service so-so. I won't be back there anytime soon.



It's open! And it's free. And its terrific for kids.

The museum is surprisingly interactive (although only 2/3 of the attractions are working) and modern (VR, simulators, touchscreens, etc). Sadly, no English on any of the displays but the fun is in trying to work out how the exhibits work and what they are supposed to be showing. Well worth a visit.
