Forums > Living in Kunming > Starbucks coming to town?

One of my adult students went for an interview for manager of the "new Starbucks" in Kunming, so it's definitely on the way. I also heard on good authority that there's already one near Metro in the north of the city?

Strange. I shopped there 3 days ago and it was heaving with imported food. The workers seemed really busy too - closing down aisle after aisle to restock the shelves... Sure it was Metro you went to?

Forums > Living in Kunming > Flight prices to Europe

Does anybody know why flights to Europe seem to have suddenly increased by 50%? I'm planning a return flight Kunming to London in July/August. A few months ago this was about 7000RMB, now it's over 10,000RMB! Anybody seen any deals or know of discount travel agencies??

Thanks JingWei. Very useful. I'm British and fiancee is a 'minger (Kunminger!). So it "should" be relatively straightforward, I think. Your advice is much appreciated. Thanks to you (and others) for taking the time.

Forums > Living in Kunming > Looking for list of decent private schools in KM to work at

BillDan - yes, you're right. Robert's is a private language school, primarily catering for kids. I got confused by your use of "school" which doesn't imply college/uni in British English. Sorry! Robert's arranges "Residents Permits" for it's foreign teachers - valid for a year, multiple entry.

Queensway - I think perhaps you've been misinformed. I'm not aware of any "alcolohics" having worked for the school. With about 100 staff, people do join and leave now and again, but teachers being "fired" is extremely rare. That's partly due to the robust screening, training and support given to new teachers. Foreign teachers, for example, have to be be well-qualilfied and professional (degree/TEFL/experience) in order to qualify for the Resident's Permit.

Not the airport staff's fault, perhaps, but the airport planners were apparently warned by locals that the area is prone to regular fog problems long before any building work started. So this will be one of many days of chaos to some.

I think there's a big difference between the vendors who ply their trade for a meagre living eg snack sellers outside schools and park, and the young, middle-class people who sell as a hobby from the back of their large cars, clogging up the roads.

Not relevant? It's totally relevant to your quote, "Pharmaceutical drugs are made from petrochemicals...".
Sorry - your links are all blocked for me. Agree to disagree, OK?

Price is now 100RMB for adults, 70RMB for children.
Some of the animal areas are as far as 10+km from the entrance - you can buy a hop on/off bus ticket for 60RMB per person, but there are also clearly marked walkways for those who are full of energy.

Everything inside is pretty expensive - consider bringing a picnic.

Many of the animals are in large outdoor enclosures. Some are caged. The park calls itself a safari, but this is not a "drive your car amongst the animals" thing. It's more like a decent western zoo.
There are places to handle/be photographed with animals, for a fee. Also, some kids amusements.
The animal show is free, but a waste of time (unless you love watching goats, sheep, pigs, horses etc!!).
Good labelling i English thorughout.

Still worth a visit, especially for the arhat statues. The 11am vegetarian lunch is basic, but still only 10RMB. Free entry.

Prague cafe used to be my favourite cafe in Wenlin area but I went for lunch there today after a few months away and it's really gone downhill (new owners?). The menu was a photocopy, the food was lacklustre and much more expensive than before, the decor was dull and the service so-so. I won't be back there anytime soon.

It's open! And it's free. And its terrific for kids.

The museum is surprisingly interactive (although only 2/3 of the attractions are working) and modern (VR, simulators, touchscreens, etc). Sadly, no English on any of the displays but the fun is in trying to work out how the exhibits work and what they are supposed to be showing. Well worth a visit.
