It is a new development zone along a road between the north end of Beijing Lu and Chuanjin Lu (the road to the golden temple)

Carrefour seems to carry fresh skim, at least it did the last time I was there. Look for 脱脂牛奶, or show the characters to your neighborhood shop and see if they can get it.

I usually drink coffee at Salvador's, but for the home brew I go for Chicago Coffee. They seem to roast their own stuff every week.

I don't have the address or number, but it's called the Madison Avenue Bookstore (麦迪逊广告人书店). If you're not in town, you should probably be able to find a contact by doing a search with the Chinese characters.

I was excited about the Think UK pool too, since it's close to my house. Unfortunately, the last time I went there it was unheated and the water was kind of dirty.
20 kuai/entry, and cheap passes if you know anyone who lives in the complex.

Nice. Here are a couple of nitpicking points:

- This is actually the third installment of the music festival, though it's got some new management this time.

- Fuxian is east, not west of Kunming

The hotline for fire is 119, but I'm sure they'll patch you through or send word along if you call general emergency (110) or information (114).

Make sure to note the highway, direction and closest km marker.

I wonder how much, if any discussion there is in the Yunnan govt about the composition of forests and how that affects forest fires.

Around Kunming and central Yunnan at least, many of the forests are full of non-native eucalyptus trees, which have evolved to encourage fires to squeeze out other species.

I can see why they planted so many of these trees. They grow fast, are highly drought-resistant, and the goats don't seem to eat them, so they were useful for holding the soil in place and mitigating some of the horrible deforestation the province has seen. But it's definitely time to start reintroducing some of Yunnan's native species, which have also adapted to long dry spells, but would hopefully be less of a fire hazard (and also promote the recovery of native plant and animal species).

Just a thought...

Right next to my office, so I eat here pretty often. The place has a nice garden design with lots of outdoor seating for nice days.

A nice menu of Western food with solid brunch choices, fresh fruit juice mixes, and good salads. The burger is also very good.

Excellent Thai food served in a beautiful art deco setting. The bar is also top notch, with great cocktails, whiskys and cigars.

When the weather is good, try to get a table on the rooftop garden, which offers views of the Bird and Flower market.

May be a little pricier than some of the other Thai restaurants in town.

An exciting new gallery space built from an old factory warehouse in the Paoluda Creative Industry Park. Looking forward to seeing what they'll do with it.

A great little place in the middle of a beautiful valley chock full of great climbing spots.

The beds and rooms are very comfortable, though the bathrooms are shared, and of the "eco" variety (a plus as far as I'm concerned).

The owners are very helpful about everything from info on climbing spots to trip planning and getting around the area.

Also, the place is dirt cheap. I wholeheartedly recommend it.
