Forums > Travel Yunnan > Scum landlords of Dali.

Do people think Scum Landlords of Dali or indeed any title containing the word Scum is appropriate for a forum on this website? Landlords in any country don't evoke my sympathy but foreigners using this sort of language about Chinese people might be interpreted as racism. I don't think it's helpful. And let's also remember rents in Dali are rising from a very low base. In 2007 a huge bar on Renmin Lu could be had for 1000 RMB a month which is frankly absurdly low.

Forums > Living in Kunming > Kunming taxis

A nice story about taxi drivers for a change. Yesterday I left my very expensive Samsung smartphone in a cab that had dropped me off outside a bookshop. Without much hope I borrowed a mobile from one of the bookshop staff and dialled my number. No answer, so I sent a message saying I'd wait outside the shop. As I was stepping outside the guy called me back and said the driver was on the line. Twenty minutes later the taxi was back with my phone. I offered 100 kuai reward but the driver refused it. A true Bodhisattva. I'll never complain about taxis again.

Two or three little shops and stalls around the Bird and Flower market have French presses of various sizes starting at around 30 kuai a piece. Look at the end near to the Macdonalds.

John's a great man. Not only did he write that fantastic book on the epic journey of northern universities to Kunming but he can also sing the complete works of Rodgers and Hammerstein.

Nice friendly neighbourhood eatery and bar. Also has some hard-to-find foreign groceries on sale. Recently Diego, the owner of Cantina, started placing some of his imported Italian stuff there for sale too. Ben, the owner, has recently introduced a very welcome drinks happy hour.

Absolutely excellent restaurant. Great lamb and chicken kebabs, koftas etc. Great nan bread and vegetarian curries. A huge menu so there'll be something for everyone. Easily the best curry house in town. When I first went some time back it was dry but I can confirm that they now sell beer and wine. They also seem to have no problem with you bringing your own drinks as we did last night. It's right next door to Diego's Cantina so very easy to find. Two of Kunming's best restaurants side by side.

Had a great dinner here the other night. Superb food and service and a friendly crowd. First time at Vincent's new place. Will definitely be back.
