I personally think meat, eggs, butter, cholesterol etc, are fine and healthy. Saturated fat and cholesterol serve real functions in your body.

Its the mixing them with refined carbs, low quantities of greens, sedentary lifestyle/obesity, and lack of other kinds of fats that is so deadly. The low fat craze of the 80's and 90s seems to have caused plenty of health problems.

And I think after 50, EVERYONE needs to be an athlete ( i really just mean a fitness freak). Its actually only young people who can afford not to be.
Walking fast is a good start. Swimming may be good as well.
Chinese herbs can also be helpful here. Fasting from dinner time to tomorrow's dinner time, once per week, is an easy way to lose weight, as it cuts down you weekly calorie total, and also good for your organs.

No traditional or modern society on the face of the earth is vegan, so its hard to say if it is healthy or not. I think it works for a few people, but not all. I do believe a healthy diet has veggies in first place and beans, white rice, bread, noodles, potatoes, beer, etc. in last place.

Dazzer's point hits home for me. I actually have to work for a living, and it is in an English speaking environment, where i must read, write, type and speak in English. I also have other time consuming responsibilities.

I can't afford to be a full time student, or to just hang out and burn mommy and daddy's money (OK a bit of bitterness there, but you get my point). I am not great at Chinese. I do speak it, but need more study, I am not a very impressive speaker, and am annoyed to catch flack from people who are lucky enough to not need English while living here.

"Most other places with large Chinese populations, don't speak Mandarin Chinese. Singapore being an exception. But even in Singa there is a mix of languages, and Mandarin is not the dominant language.'

Maybe at one time, but Canada has started to go Mandarin.
Malaysia has plenty of it too.
Taiwan is obvious.

Hong Kongese under the age of 30 can speak it, so in the future it will be more common there than it was before (lots of older Hong Kong folks can't speak mandarin).
Singapore I don't know about, I haven't been.

I am not sure if you have done this, but I would research diet and nutrition a bit more to see if you really need to be doing cutting fat etc. Obviously, don't take my word for it, but I don't think you need to cut those things like saturated fat out of your diet.

If it were me, I would add a ton of poly and mono unsaturated fats by buying flax oil and flax seeds (available here in town), olive oil, and lots of high quality fish oil and taking high doses everyday. I would ask for less rice and extra veggies anytime you eat Chinese food, you can pay 5 yuan more for this, and eat the veggies first. otherwise I would keep eating normal food. But I would always have fruit and nuts on hand (in your car, e-bike, bike, bag. etc) everyday.

Most importantly, I would make 45 minutes at the gym (doing whole body exercises and cardio) my daily morning routine. And I would try to be in bed before midnight on 25 nights per month. I would also look at stress in my life. You may also simply eat less damn food.

Saturated fat, such as butter, meat, yogurt, coconut etc. is an important part of a healthy diet, particularly for males, so i wouldn't cut it out. Lots of doctors say stupid things about nutrition, which are based on studies of sedentary, overweight people, who's diet comes from boxes and plastic containers, who eat tons of refined sugars, and who have never seen a bottle of olive oil or sesame oil in their life.

I think there are endless healthy ways for you to eat, you don't need a special place to go, you need good technique for ordering and inquiring at Chinese restaurants. Asking about green vegetables, steamed foods, etc is a good idea. Overall though, maybe becoming an athlete, not gorging yourself, and ADDING lifesaving nutrients to balance things out is the main thing, not cutting out your favorite foods.

Good music (very good actually), fresh food, nice decorations. Not very spacious, but on the other hand that also makes it a bit cozy. Pizza is pretty good, yogurt and chocolate are made in the shop.

Not the cheapest, but affordable to be sure, and a better bargain than most places around wen lin jie. And unlike some places, you won't get anything insulting or shocking on your plate. If the menu says salad, you will get a salad, if the menu says pizza, you will get a pizza- not a miniature cake with ketchup and fruit melted on to it. An actual pizza that you will want to eat. They also have good beer.

I know this place very well.

Here is the breakdown.

PROS:
Super friendly, sincere, staff who do care about you.

Good greasy spoon breakfast for the masochistic.

Best salad in Kunming.

Reasonably priced lunches.

Nice selection for Korean food.

Some nice fish, steak, etc.
They have decaf coffee, if you feel like a very late coffee.

Friendly atmosphere and lots of natural light.

CONS

Sandwiches are mostly bread, white bread, with little inside.

Almost every beef dish is murdered by excessive cumin.

Deserts are too sweet, heavy, and not well made.

Pizza, breakfast sausage, enchiladas and burgers are all pretty nasty. Not so good.

Dry environment is a bit plain and they often play music such as Air Supply type stuff, that can be really annoying.

The waiters, are a bit incompetent and don't realy know it. They always forget something. You just have to remind them, and everything will be ok, but still...

Conclusion: I would only go out of my way to eat here for the salad bar at dinner time-very good! Otherwise, I would come here often if I lived nearby. If not living nearby, and not a salad person, it would be an ok place to eat, but not a must.
