What a great experience we had last Sunday evening at My Favor, I've been frequenting this restaurant since it opened over a year ago, and wondered why is this such a well-kept secret, but over that time it has become clearer that it is less of a secret now.
I love going there because they offer so much variety (Chinese and Western) and the western food is authentic, the Exec Chef Steven is charming, speaks great English and knows his stuff, He can produce such a broad range of dishes, the Beef Carpaccio, Buffalo Mozzarella & Tomato salad, Tiramisu are all wonderful, as is the New Zealand Roast Sirloin and in-house baked bread, always served warm.
This elegant dining haven has several clearly separate areas, including my favourite non-smoking dining room, which is large, slightly elevated, very elegant, and well ventilated, soft background music, comfortable, spacious seating, clean white linen everywhere, cutlery and service reminiscent of a French 5 start restaurant.....did I mention the superfast free wifi......
The real surprise last Sunday was the recently added Buffet, my business partners and I wandered in for a coffee and a short rest after a long day with clients at about 5.30pm, expecting to see a few pre-dinner patrons lingering and enjoying coffee, but our my surprise the place was almost full to capacity and the staff hurrying back and forth from the kitchen with large platters of food – they were setting up a buffet, Chef Steven, was guiding the traffic from the kitchen with the precision of a Staff Sargent, getting the job done efficiently and with the least fuss possible.
We were escorted to one of the last tables available in the non-smoking room and what was going to be a quick coffee break turned into a long drawn out dinner, dinning on some of the best quality food I have ever enjoyed in Kunming, from imported roast meats to succulent prawns, sushi and sashimi, salads, a variety of soups, western and local dishes, beverages hot and cold, a selection of deserts and finally a large bowl if ice-cream, it was delightful, and I was staggered at the price of 88 yuan per person, we rolled out of there after 9.30pm and people were still coming in to be seated.
I believe they only started this buffet on Friday, Saturday and Sunday evenings, 3 weeks ago and already appears to have proven very successful.
Congratulations guys on another success in Kunming's culinary landscape, a place worthy of success and our continued presence..... loved it....
After 14 months in Kunming I've finally found a restaurant that knows how to cook a steak! The last time I had a decent steak was a year ago in Chang Sha.
We found My Favor because of the ad here on Go Kunming. I was not disappointed. The restaurant if very much "upscale", sharing the 6th floor of the Brilliant Plaza with other restaurants that it's Chinese, Japanese and Korean equals, so we've found a great place to go for special occasions.
Being non-smokers we really appreciated the separate no smoking room. The decor is quite elegant and the entire place is spotlessly clean (even polished where it should be).
We were given separate menus for food, beverages and deserts. There was enough selection to satisfy anybody but not so overwhelming that you couldn't decide what to have. The price range was also varied, ranging from modest to a lot.
I chose my always favorite beef tenderloin. Although the menu didn't state it, the dish was served with a choice of the five soups that were offered. My wife stuck with the pasta (she's a noodle nut).
The only downside came in the timing. Our soups arrived together, but my wife had finished her main course before mine arrived.
The serving staff did not hover over us but were quickly available when we wanted something, however, we were the only customers so I can't comment on what service might be like at busy times.
Overall I was very satisfied and might make this a place for a once a month treat.
